SAN ANTONIO -
Iowa used a six-run second inning and 7.0 shutout innings from starter Nick Brown en route to an 11-2 victory over Notre Dame in second day action from the 2011 Irish Baseball Stadium at Wolff Stadium. The Irish dropped to 7-9 on the season, while the Hawkeyes improved to 7-8.
Senior RHP Brian Dupra, who entered the game with a 1.24 ERA over his first four starts, was not himself. He was charged with the loss and dropped to 2-2 on the year. Dupra was charged with six runs, five earned, on 12 hits in 5.0 innings of work. He struck out three and walked two.
Brown was masterful for the Hawkeyes. The right-handed hurler upped his record to 2-1 on the season. Brown allowed just four hits over his 7.0 scoreless innings. He fanned three and did not issue a walk.
Iowa pretty much salted the game away in the top of the second inning. The Hawkeyes opened the frame with three straight hits, two of which barely left the infield, to grab a 1-0 lead. After a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with two down, Dupra was unable to limit the damage as Iowa followed with four consecutive two-out singles to push the lead to 6-0.
The six-run lead was more than enough for Brown.
Trevor Willis, Mike McQuilan and Chett Zeise each had three hits for Iowa.
The Hawkeyes also benefitted from a season-high 11 walks from the Irish pitching staff. Notre Dame's previous game-high for walks was six against Seattle on Feb. 26. The Irish had walked only 26 batters in 133.0 innings of work entering today. In fact, Notre Dame totaled 11 walks over its last five games combined. The Irish have not issued more free passes in a game since walking 13 on May 24, 2003 against Rutgers.
Sophomore RHP Patrick Veerkamp allowed four runs, all earned, on two hits and five walks in 0.2 innings. Freshman RHP Donnie Hissa tossed 1.2 hitless innings of relief. He fanned three and walked one. Senior LHP Joe Spizzirri worked around three walks in 0.2 scoreless innings. Freshman RHP Sean Fitzgerald tossed a scoreless inning.
Senior SS Mick Doyle went 1-for-4 with an RBI, while sophomore OF Adam Norton went 1-for-2 with an RBI double.
Notre Dame plays Gonzaga at Noon and 11:00 a.m. CT on Saturday and Sunday. Each game can be heard on WHME Harvest 103.1 FM and UND.com.
