April 11, 2007

The Notre Dame-Bowling Green baseball game scheduled for Wed., April 11, has been canceled due to weather conditions in the South Bend area. The Irish may add a midweek makeup game later in the season. This marks Notre Dame's first home game lost to weather since late April of the 2004 season.

Notre Dame's probable pitching rotation for the upcoming BIG EAST home series versus Georgetown (April 13-15) includes three righthanders (in order): sophomore David Phelps, senior Dan Kapala and sophomore Kyle Weiland. Two others who were slated to be today's primary pitchers - junior LHP Wade Korpi and freshman RHP Eric Maust - also could be used in key relief roles during the ND-GU series.

It has been almost three years to the day since the previous time that a game at Eck Stadium was lost due to weather, dating back to a scheduled matchup with Purdue on April 20, 2004. The BIG EAST home series versus Villanova in 2005 (April 22-24) ultimately was played on the 22nd and 25th (doubleheader), due to weather postponements - with all three games eventually being played during that four-day stretch.

As a reminder to Notre Dame fans who will be in town next week for the Blue-Gold football festivities, the Irish baseball team will be in action that week for a theeg-game BIG EAST series with West Virginia on April 20-22 (Friday at 6:05, Saturday at 3:05 and Sunday at 1:05). Note that the Saturday game time is later than a typical Saturday start, allowing fans the opportunity to attend both the football scrimmage (1:35) and the baseball game.
