ANN ARBOR, Mich. -
University of Michigan sophomore RHP James Bourque limited the University of Notre Dame to one hit over 7.2 scoreless innings to lead the Wolverines to an 8-2 victory Tuesday at Ray Fisher Stadium. The Fighting Irish dropped their sixth straight game, dropped to 19-15, while Michigan improved to 21-14.
Bourque, who limited Notre Dame to a run on five hits in Michigan's 4-1 victory over the Irish last Tuesday, improved to 4-4 on the season. He struck out a career-high eight and walked a pair. Bourque technically took a no-hitter into eighth inning, but Notre Dame freshman SS Lane Richards ripped a single to left field to erase any doubt. Junior 1B Trey Mancini appeared to have broken up the no hitter in the top of the seventh, but his hot shot to second base was ruled an error.
Irish freshman LHP Zak Kutsulis was charged with the loss and dropped to 0-1 on the year. He scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs over 5.0 innings of work. Kutsulis struck out three and walked none. He also added a double and run scored at the plate.
The bottom of the Wolverine lineup victimized the Irish all night. Kevin White, Michigan's six-hole hitter, went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, while No. 8 batter Cole Martin went 3-for-4 with a couple RBI and run scored.
The Wolverines took advantage of suspect Notre Dame defense as the Irish committed four errors.
Notre Dame trailed just 2-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, but Michigan touched up Irish junior RHP Donnie Hissa with six runs, four earned, on five hits in just 1.1 innings of relief.
Freshman RHP David Hearne tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. He collected a strikeout.
Junior 1B Trey Mancini went 1-for-4 with a run scored and RBI single. Senior CF Charlie Markson also went 1-for-4 with an RBI single.
Notre Dame will be back in action at 5:35 p.m. ET Wednesday against Bowling Green at Frank Eck Stadium.
