Aaron Heilman collected his 15th win in fifteen starts as Notre Dame topped
Wisconsin-Milwaukee 12-4 in Game One of the Notre Dame regional.
The Big East Pitcher of the Year came out after a 2:24 rain delay to limit
the Panthers to four runs on seven hits in the full nine innings. Heilman
struck out two in the ninth to finish with seven strikeouts and four walks in
his 12th complete game of the season.
Lead-off hitter Steve Stanley went 5-for-5 for the Irish, scoring three runs
while driving in another. The Big East Co-Player of the Year's ground-rule
double in Notre Dame's nine-run fourth inning drove in Matt Bok for Notre
Dame's sixth run of the ballgame.
After Steve Sollman walked, Panthers coach Jerry Augustine pulled starter
Quintin Oldenburg in favor of righthander Rob Erickson, who had not pitched
since May 8.
Irish shortstop Alec Porzel promptly greeted Erickson with a three-run shot
to left field, Porzel's eighth home run of the year. Stavisky followed with a
solo shot to center, giving the Irish a 10-1 lead. Stavisky finished the day
a triple short of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs batted in.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee closed the gap in the eighth, as senior second baseman
Scott Gillitzer followed a walk to Matt Houk and a single by Derek Daggett
with a three-run blast over the right field fence.
The Irish take on the winner of the Florida International-California Santa
Barbara contest Saturday afternoon at 3:30. The Panthers look to remain alive
in the double-elimination regional when they take on the loser of that
contest Saturday at noon.
