Notre Dame Baseball Bounces Back
Irish Down Southwest Texas State, 8-0
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Notre Dame baseball team opened the fouth inning with four straight hits and junior righthander Brad Lidge turned in seven shutout innings, as the Irish defeated Southwest Texas State. 8-0, Sunday at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
Notre Dame (7-7) avenged a 9-4 loss on Saturday to the Wildcats while receiving balanced contributions from throughout the lineup.
Lidge (2-2) retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced while allowing just five hits and no walks over seven full innings, with seven strikeouts. Freshman righthander Aaron Heilman pitched the eighth while freshman lefty Mike Maumann closed out the shutout in his first appearance for the Irish.
Freshman righthander Blake Williams (1-1) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and one walk over four and one-third innings, with one strikeout.
Sophomore third baseman Brant Ust sent a full-count offering up the middle to open the bottom of the fourth and scored on junior centerfielder. Allen Greene's triple to right center. Freshman leftfielder Alec Porzel then brought home Greene with a double to left center and scored on a single through the right side of the infiels by Sophomore first baseman Jeff Felker. Senior second baseman Todd Frye added a sacrifice bunt and sophomore rightfielder Jeff Perconte capped the scoring with a first pitch single down the right field line.
Ust and Greene hit back-to-back singles in the fifth, with leftfielder Mike Stegent making a one base wrror on each play. Stegent overran the first hit, allowing Ust to move to second, before Stegent threw wide of the pickoff man on Greene's single, allowing Ust to score unearned.
The Irish tacked on a run in the sixth, after junior catcher Mike Knecht hit a one-out single, moved to third on a pair of wild pitches by senior lefthander Adrian Castaneda and scored on a two- out single to right by senior shortstop J.J. Brock.
Notre Dame stretched to an 8-0 lead in the seventh, with junior Jeff Wagner hitting a first pitch single to left field. Wagner took second on a passed ball and scored on Ust's double off the rightfield wall, with Ust's moving to third on the throw home. Greene then plated Ust with a single up the middle, ending the brief three-batter stint of senior righthander Lance Curry.
