NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Notre Dame junior 1B Trey Mancini was selected by the Baltimore Orioles with the 23rd pick of the eighth round and No. 249 overall in the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Mancini is the third Irish player chosen in the top-10 rounds of this year's draft. The New York Yankees drafted Eric Jagielo in the first round and the San Francisco Giants selected Dan Slania in the fifth round.
Mancini, Slania and Jagielo give Notre Dame three draft picks in the top-10 rounds of the draft for the first time since 2004. In fact, only once in school history have the Irish had more than three players drafted in the first 10 rounds (2004, four).
"I'm both thrilled and honored to be drafted by the Baltimore Orioles," said Mancini. "It has always been my dream to play professional baseball, but I'm also blessed to play baseball at the University of Notre Dame. I will take some time, sit down with my family and talk to my coaches and determine the best decision going forward.
"It will be a difficult decision. The opportunity to start my professional playing career is very enticing, but so is returning for my senior year. I'd get the chance to finish school, earn my degree and play in the Atlantic Coast Conference."
"Trey is a phenomenal hitter," said head coach Mik Aoki. "He has proven himself to be one of the truly elite hitters in the country from his first year at Notre Dame. The Baltimore Orioles validated that belief today. His value as an above-average defender at first base is truly undervalued. I am hoping that he will come back to Notre Dame but he's got a difficult decision to make. Whatever he decides, I am thrilled for Trey and support him fully."
Mancini not only led the BIG EAST in hitting (.389) and total bases (138), but he also ranked tied for first in triples (seven), second in hits (89), second in slugging percentage (.603), tied for third in sacrifice flies (eight), tied for third in RBI (54), tied for sixth in home runs (seven) and seventh in on-base percentage (.431).
Mancini led Notre Dame in multi-hit outings (27) and ranks second in multi-RBI games (11). He was held hitless in just nine of 57 games. He was off the charts over the second-half of the season. Mancini set a school-record 23-game hitting streak that spanned April 14-May 22. A first-team all-BIG EAST selection in 2013, Mancini was named third team in both 2010 and 2011. He was the first Irish player to receive conference mention in three straight years since A.J. Pollock in 2007-09.
Mancini, who was named the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week on April 30, batted .434 (62-for-143) after April 1, including .486 over his last 25 games. He fell three base hits shy of becoming the first Notre Dame player to bat .400 over the course of an entire season since Cooper in 2006 (.425). Mancini would have been the 10th player in the 120-year history of Irish baseball to accomplish the feat.
Mancini's three-year career numbers, include a .345 batting average (214-for-620), 109 runs scored, 39 doubles, 10 triples, 28 home runs, 133 RBI, 357 total bases, .576 slugging percentage, 62 walks, 10 hit by pitch, 97 strikeouts, .405 on-base percentage, 14 sacrifice flies, one sacrifice hit, 10-17 stolen bases, 1,334 putouts, 133 assists and just 16 errors (fielding percentage of .989).
Mancini was named 2011 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year after leading Notre Dame in batting (.323), hits (61), doubles (15), triples (three), home runs (nine), RBI (34), total bases (109), slugging percentage (.577), on-base percentage (.385), multiple hit games (17), multiple RBI games (nine) and runs scored (33).
Mancini was the first Irish rookie and eighth player in program history to lead Notre Dame in all three triple-crown categories (batting average, home runs and RBI). He was named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American
Mancini is the 26th Notre Dame player selected in the top 10 rounds over the past 18 years, dating back to the 1995 draft.
The three-day draft concludes Saturday. Check back to www.und.com and @NDBaseball for further draft updates.
