Rising junior David Casey (Whitefish Bay, Wisc./Whitefish Bay) and rising senior Casey Martin (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) were each named Most Valuable Players of their respective collegiate summer leagues earlier this month. Casey batted .299 with a league leading six home runs and league leading 39 RBI for the Conejo Oaks of the California Collegiate League, while Martin hit .344 with two home runs and 20 RBI. Martin also earned the league's coaches award.
"We are extremely excited about the success of all our players this summer, especially with David (Casey) and Casey (Martin)," said third-year head coach Dave Schrage. "Those two made major improvements this summer and it will be extremely beneficial to our club heading into fall ball and next spring."
Below is an update on how the Irish fared this summer.
David Casey - California Collegiate League, Conejo Oaks (33-24, 3rd)
Has started and played in 52 of team's 57 games ... batted .299 with 11 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 39 RBI ... drew 27 walks and scored 24 runs ... led club in home runs and RBI ... ranked among the top five in the league in RBI (1st), home runs (t-1st), slugging percentage (2nd), doubles (t-3rd) and hits (4th) ... named first team all-league at first base ... voted as the top power prospect by the coaches ... also made six pitching appearances, including five out of the Oaks' bullpen ... went 2-0 with a 0.69 earned run average in 13.0 innings of work ... allowed just one earned run on three hits with 14 strikeouts and five walks ... opponents hit just .075 against him.
Casey Martin - Mountain Collegiate Baseball League, Laramie Colts (23-22, 2nd)
Billy Boockford - Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, Southampton Breakers (24-16, 2nd Kaiser)
Saw action in 36 games and started 33 (through team's first 39 games; stats have not been updated) ... batted .344 with 13 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 20 RBI ... drew 13 walks and scored 25 runs ... owned a .415 on-base percentage and .532 slugging percentage ... also swiped four bases in six attempts ... led the team in doubles and triples ... ranks second in batting average and fourth in RBI ... captured league MVP and the coaches' award ... helped club win second consecutive league title.
Saw action in 28 games and made 25 starts ... batted .239 with two doubles, two home runs, 11 runs scored, four stolen bases and 11 RBI ... also made five appearances out of the bullpen ... sported a 1-1 record with a 5.14 earned run average in 7.0 innings of work ... surrendered eight hits and seven runs, only four of which were earned ... walked eight and struck out 10.
Tommy Chase - New York Collegiate Baseball League, Geneva Redwings (21-20-1, 4th West)
Saw action in 14 games with 11 starts ... had two doubles and six RBI ... drew nine walks and scored five runs ... also swiped five bases.
Evan Danieli - Cape Cod Baseball League, Falmouth Commodores (17-24-2, 4th West)
Made four relief appearances ... posted an 0-0 record with a 1.80 earned run average ... surrendered one earned run on four hits ... struck out eight and walked five.
Brian Dupra - Cape Cod Baseball League, Harwich Mariners (18-25-1, 5th East)
Made 13 appearances out of the bullpen ... went 2-1 with a 5.48 earned run average ... surrendered 20 hits in 23.0 innings of work ... struck out 25 and walked seven ... opponents hit just .233 against him.
Matt Grosso - New England Collegiate Baseball League, Manchester Silkworms (13-26, 5th East)
Played and started 22 games after spending couple weeks with Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League ... batted .241 with four doubles and three seven ... drew six walks and scored six runs.
Will Harford - New York Collegiate Baseball League, Geneva Redwings (21-20-1, 4th West)
Started and played in 39 games ... batted .315 with 11 doubles and 16 RBI ... drew 11 walks and scored 17 runs ... led the squad in hits, ranked second in doubles and ranked fifth in RBI ... named second team all-NYCBL at third base.
Will Hudgins - Woodstock River Bandits, Valley Baseball League (24-22, 2nd Central)
Made 17 appearances and 16 of them came out of the bullpen ... went 3-1 with a 4.83 earned run average in 31.2 innings of work ... surrendered 38 hits and 13 walks to go along with 32 strikeouts ... opponents batted .302 against him.
Cole Johnson - Cape Cod Baseball League, Hyannis Mets (16-26-1, 5th West)
Made eight appearances, seven starts ... went 1-2 with a 3.93 earned run average in 36.2 innings of work ... allowed 34 hits with 44 strikeouts and 13 walks ... opponents batted .245 against him.
Matt Katich - Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, Stark County Terriers (11-23, 9th)
Saw action in 15 games with 10 starts ... had a double and RBI ... drew three walks and scored one run.
Eric Maust - Cape Cod Baseball League, Hyannis Mets (16-26-1, 5th West)
Made 10 appearances, nine out of the bullpen ... went 2-2 with a 2.29 earned run average in 19.2 innings of work ... yielded 16 hits and struck out 17 with six walks.
Cameron McConnell - Coastal Plains League, Forest City Owls (46-9, 1st West)
Saw action in 24 games and started 22 ... batted .310 with a double, home run and 11 RBI ... drew four walks and scored 10 runs ... three out eight base stealers in 23 stolen base attempts ... went 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI on July 16 and then went 3-for-4 against with an RBI on July 18 ... helped club to the league championship in just the team's second season of existence ... team set the CPL single-season record with 46 wins ... top-seeded Owls won all five playoff games ... became the first team in the CPL since Edenton in 2005 to go unbeaten in the postseason.
Todd Miller - Coastal Plains League, Florence RedWolves (30-25, 2nd South)
Made 13 appearances and one start ... went 1-2 with a 5.91 earned run average ... surrendered 30 hits and six walks in 21.1 innings of work ... struck out 15.
David Mills - AABC Baseball League, Stan Musial
Sported a 7-0 record with a 0.62 earned run average in 58.0 innings of work ... struck out 74 and walked just six ... hit .376 with 11 doubles, five triples and 49 RBI ... drew 14 walks, scored 55 runs and swiped 22 stolen bases.
Herman Petzold - Coastal Plains League, Florence RedWolves (30-25, 2nd South)
Saw action in 43 games and started 37 ... batted .262 with two doubles, one triple, one home run and 22 RBI ... drew 20 walks and scored 17 runs ... owned a .373 on-base percentage ... committed just six errors in 188 fielding chances, good for a .968 fielding percentage ... league all-star.
Ryan Richter - Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, Grand Lake Mariners (25-10, 2nd)
Made 13 appearances and three starts ... went 2-2 with a 3.04 earned run average and two saves in 26.2 innings of work ... surrendered 23 hits and struck out 16 with 11 walks ... opponents are batting just .230 against him.
Alex Robinson - Texas Collegiate League, East Texas PumpJacks (26-19, 2nd)
Saw action in 26 games ... had two doubles and five RBI ... drew 11 walks and scored nine runs ... swiped five bases in eight attempts.
Steve Sabatino - The Prospect League, Dupage Dragons (26-28, 3rd West)
Made 12 appearances and six starts ... sported a 2-5 record with a 6.11 earned run average in 45.2 innings of work ... surrendered 44 hits and 18 walks ... struck out 39.
Andrew Scheid - Mountain Collegiate Baseball League, Laramie Colts (22-17, 2nd)
Made four appearances and two starts ... went 0-1 ... surrendered five hits and 11 walks in 7.1 innings of work ... struck out six ... all stats are through team's first 39 games; stats have not been updated ... helped club win second consecutive league title.
Matt Scioscia - California Collegiate League, Conejo Oaks (33-24, 3rd)
Has started and played in 35 games ... batted .258 with five doubles, one triple, one home run and 29 RBI ... drew 11 walks and scored 13 runs ... ranked second on club in RBI ... ranked third in the league in RBI ... earned second team all-league catcher.

Made eight appearances and two starts ... went 1-1 with a 3.42 earned run average and one save ... surrendered 18 hits in 23.2 innings of work ... struck out 30 ... opponents batted just .225 against him.
