NOTRE DAME, Ind. - University of Notre Dame baseball seniors Sean Fitzgerald and Forrest Johnson have been named 2014 team captains in a vote by their teammates, fourth-year head coach Mik Aoki announced Thursday.

"The team did a great job picking captains for the 2014 season," said Aoki. "Both Sean and Forrest really command the respect of the guys in the locker room and deservedly so. They are both really hard workers and they do a good job in the classroom and in our community service activities, which are a lot of the things we value as a program. They have done an exceptional job of embodying a Notre Dame student-athlete."

"Being voted co-captain with Forrest is a great honor and an incredible opportunity," said Fitzgerald. "It puts me in a position to not only lead, but also be an integral part in the positive change of our culture in the locker room and on the field. I believe that having a pitcher and position player as a captain can be extremely beneficial in keeping the team close and organized, particularly when we need our team playing at its highest level as we enter the ACC this year. I am incredibly excited for all of us to continue improving this winter, and am anxious to start playing better as a team, top to bottom, this spring."

"It is such an honor to be selected as a team captain by my teammates and coaches," said Johnson. "From an individual standpoint, it is a sense of recognition from my team for all the years of hard work that I invested into making myself and those around me better. More importantly, being named captain is a huge responsibility to represent everything that Notre Dame baseball values and believes in. I am very honored to have this responsibility, and I am looking forward to working with Sean and the rest of the guys to produce the best team possible, on and off the field."

Last season, Fitzgerald pitched in 18 games, earning starts in 14 contests. The McLean, Va., native went 5-4 with a 4.89 ERA in 73.2 innings of work. Johnson, meanwhile, started 54 games at catcher, producing 31 hits and scoring 17 runs while fielding at a .986 clip.
