Irish Begin Road Swing Sunday At Boston College

Notre Dame has three straight road games on its docket.

AS A SOPHOMORE: Hard-nosed center who is one of the team's most improved players ...adds bulk and size to Irish front court that will rank as one of the most talented nationally this season...has played organized ball for four years...good high-post player who can score with his back to the basket...displayed a knack as a freshman on the offensive glass...has a nice shooting touch from 15 feet and in...runs the floor well for a player his size...gives the Irish tremendous depth off the bench...one of two Croatian players on Irish team.

AS A FRESHMAN: Scored a career-high 11 points vs. St. Peters (Dec. 31), the only double-figure scoring game of the season...had seven points in quarterfinal NIT win over BYU (March 22)...scored three points with three rebounds in first round NIT win over Michigan (March 15) and added six rebounds vs. Xavier (March 20)...came off the bench to play in all 37 contests...earned only start of the season against Miami (Jan. 25)...has played organized basketball for three years, participating in the junior national program in Croatia for two years...hit one of two free throws with 1:00 left to go vs. Connecticut (Feb. 12) to give Irish the lead for good...also had a blocked shot at the end of the game...had a then career-high six rebounds vs. the Huskies...dished off a career-high three assists against St. Peter's...played a career-high 26 minutes in win over Connecticut (Jan. 5) with two points and five rebounds to tie a career high...scored his first collegiate points with four point effort vs. Arizona (Nov. 24)...after playing three mintues in the first three games of the year, played 15 minutes vs. Arizona, 11 vs. Maryland and 12 vs. Indiana...injured his leg in the first exhibition game of the season, which slowed his progress..averaged 2.5 points and 2.3 rebounds.

HIGH SCHOOL AND PERSONAL DATA: Has played organized basketball for four years, participating in the junior national program in Croatia for two years... played for head coach Michael Byrnes at Winchendon...led the team to a 30-6 record in 1998-99 and averaged 13.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game...team won the National Invitation Tournament, which featured some of the top prep school teams in the country...was top-ranked student in class...youngest of four children...full name is Ivan (pronounced ee-VAHN) Kartelo...born 9-23-79 in Split, Croatia...enrolled in the Mendoza College of Business.
