Notre Dame Coach Mike Brey Quotes

On Notre Dame's control of the paint...
"We got Jordan [Cornette] in gear, and he was on a roll. And I was so happy for Dennis [Latimore], because he has been struggling a little lately, and now I think we have him back in the right frame of mind. Quite frankly, I'm sure our big guys are just sick of hearing how good everybody else's big guys are."

On the play of the Notre Dame backcourt...
"I thought our guards did a fabulous job controlling the tempo. Chris and Chris - when you have two quarterbacks out there they can control things."

On controlling the UConn fast break...
"Transition defense was key. We learned a lesson in the win last year when we only gave them 11 points in transition, and this year we held them to 12. We controlled the boards, and that allowed us to control the tempo very well."

On the play of Senior Guard Chris Thomas...
"He didn't force things. He involved his teammates. He drove, he dished, and he really spearheaded our defense in the last few minutes. He's been great. He really set the tone from the end of the Villanova game through today."

    Senior Forward Dennis Latimore

    On the game...
"Everyone was talking up UConn's big men and we were really looking forward to showcasing our front court. Coach Brey has been telling our big men to step up ever since BIG EAST started and when you are playing against guys like Boone, Gay and Villanueva-they are the most talented and versatile big men in the country and we had the opportunity to challenge ourselves while showing their front court what we can do."

    Senior Guard Chris Thomas

On the missed layup to end the game...
"I have missed many of those kind of shots myself. When he dropped it on the rim like that with all the momentum going and the game on the line-it was a tough shot."

    On using the inside more...
"So many other teams had been going inside on us and we wanted to counter that by getting it inside; giving our big guys touches and confidence on the offensive end."

    Junior Guard Chris Quinn

On what this game says about the team...
"This is a huge win for us coming off of two losses. The Connecticut team has tremendous talent and we have to use the energy generated by this win to go back on the road and play in the Carrier Dome."

"Our big guys deserve a lot of credit. They stepped up to the challenge of Uconn's front court."

    Junior Center Torin Francis

On playing this game after two tough losses...
"We had our backs up against the wall today after those past couple losses. If we play as if our backs are up against the wall every game we'll be unstoppable."

    Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun Quotes

    On the game...
"They got a lot of lose balls and rebounds. We executed our stuff, but the game was decided by who was going to get a loose ball or a rebound. It was a hell of a college basketball game. I think Mike's kids won the game by making the tough plays."

    On Notre Dame...
"First of all, congratulations to Mike and his kids. I thought they did a terrific job. He should be tremendously proud of his kids. They had 38 points in the paint today and they completely dominated our frontcourt. Latimore and Francis did a wonderful job."

    On UCONN...
"We took away what we thought was one of their strengths - three point shooting and their guards. I thought we did a magnificent job. Marcus Williams was the best point guard on the floor today. My sophomore was pretty special today and his defense was great."

    Sophomore Center Charlie Villanueva

On the atmosphere at the Notre Dame arena...
"The atmosphere was great. Notre Dame's tradition goes back a long time. "

On the reason the game turned and the competitiveness of the game...
"It was a close game the whole second half, but down the stretch we just didn't make big plays."

    Sophomore Forward Josh Boone

On the game and how he and the team played...
"We definitely didn't play our best basketball. They beat us on the boards today. Torin [Francis] and Dennis Latimore played really good games. That was really the key today."

    On Dennis Latimore...
"He's a good player and good players step up in critical times. That's what he did today."
