    Notre Dame vs. Louisville
    February 9, 2013
Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center • Notre Dame, Ind.

Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey

    Opening comments...

"Where do you want me to start? Because I don't know where to start. Unbelievable. I'm really proud of my team because many times we were down and in the overtime and kept fighting back. Everybody was part of it tonight. It's one of those magical nights in our building. They were really good, hard to score on. I can't even remember all of the big plays different guys made to get us to where we're at with a win like that. We've had a lot of good wins in this building but I can't remember one more thrilling or dramatic with different twists and turns."

On Jerian Grant sending the game to overtime...

"I've never seen anything like that. I was about to strangle him for his play up until that point and what he did there was amazing. He hits tough shots a lot, but to do that, because people were going up the aisles - they were starting to leave. I'm thinking what's the speech - we lose this one and how do we bounce back? All of a sudden we're back in it, but no, I've never seen anything like that."

    On the bench play...

"The contributions, certainly by Zach [Auguste] and Cam [Biedscheid] were huge. Cam came off the bench and played 50 minutes. How about Garrick Sherman? I can't say enough about him. He was a little bit of a forgotten guy. It's really something to build on because a lot of guys were part of this. When you go that long, as it's going into overtime three, four and five, I'm thinking this is going to be too bad if we don't get it because we've come this far and really invested ourselves. I'm very proud of our guys showing a lot of character, a lot of fight. We were having fun. I mean we were laughing."

On losing multiple players due to fouls...

"It's amazing how different guys step forward. But we've had that already this year. With Scott Martin going down, Tom Knight came through for us. I think it's a little bit of a trademark of our program - guys deliver when we ask them to deliver. I'm really proud of our group. Eric Atkins right now, I don't even know if he can see straight he's so exhausted."

    On reinventing the team...

"The one thing I told our team before we went out the last time, this nucleus, when there's been hyped up games, they've delivered on these stages in this building when there's a lot expected. They did that tonight, just kept finding ways. Something like this you can build on and we're going to use that to hopefully build our confidence and our toughness."

    On the defensive effort...

"Our ball screen defense was fabulous tonight. Our big guys hung around their guards and did a great job. We bought some time and zoned. But our big guys really helped our guards guarding Peyton Siva and Russ Smith on the ball screens."

On coaching in a game like this...

"It's great. It was fun. I kept checking how many timeouts I had because you lose track. Our staff was fabulous. We were calm talking about stuff - do we try zone or matchup differently? We played small at times and subbed offensively. That's what it's all about. It was enjoyable."

On the team's fight to win...

"We watched a boxing video last night. I talked about it being a fifteen rounder, taking punches and being put on the mat. That was our theme going into it. I think we'll keep the boxing gloves out on the road for awhile."

    Notre Dame Player Quotes

Jack Cooley • Senior • Forward

On Jerian Grant stepping up at the end of regulation...

"He had 12 straight points in a matter of seconds. That was like Reggie Miller. That is unbelievable. Just to be able to come back at that point was just incredible. It was amazing how everyone on our team stepped up today."

On what he was thinking as the game moved on...

"What our team was doing at the end there was incredible. If you fight that hard and lose, you are devastated. There were a bunch of times when it looked like it was over, but we just kept fighting. Sherman has 17 points in overtime. How many teams have a guy who can come in and play like that in overtime?"

On watching the game go into so many overtime periods...

"I guess since I fouled out early I had enough energy to keep up with everything. It was incredible. It was so nerve racking. That was more stressful than watching the football game against Pitt."

    Garrick Sherman• Senior • Center

On not playing many minutes recently...

"I have been through way worse. This is nothing. I just had to overcome it, and that is what we did tonight as a team. Everybody helped me when I got on the court. It wasn't just me."

On the wild tip to tie the game...

"We needed a bucket. Zach shot it. We were all just going after the ball and I guess luck just went our way. It was pretty much a blessing."

    On getting more playing time...

"I am just concerned with helping my team. Whenever I am called to go in I will do all I can to help out. It just so happened that today it was in overtime. Everyone was stepping up tonight."

On the secret to battling Gorgui Dieng...

"There is no secret. It is just a war. You have to be physical with him. He is a big strong guy. It was just an all out battle down there."

    Pat Connaughton• Sophomore • Guard

On the importance of this win...

"This does a lot for us. Jerian Grant had the best comeback I've ever seen in my life. With what he did to extend that game to overtime, we couldn't lose after that. We couldn't let it happen, and we didn't. We kept on playing, even when it looked like we were going to lose. If we lost everyone would have told us that we played a good game, but to come away with the win was amazing. It was the best game I've ever been a part of."

On what Garrick Sherman gave to the team...

"It was amazing, but we all knew that he could do it. He is a very tough kid. He battles, and I think he showed everybody that tonight in a very big way."

On how he feels now that the game is over...

"To be honest, I never thought of that. We were all thinking about one thing, and that was finding a way to win that game. I didn't care how it happened. I didn't care how many overtimes it took. We all just found a way to send it into more overtimes until we were able to finally take it."

Jerian Grant • Junior • Guard

On his performance in the final minute of regulation...

"I have hit game-winning shots before, but there is nothing that really compares to this. That final minute in regulation was just surreal. I was just thinking that I did not want to lose that game. We knew that losing two in a row in the BIG EAST would be very tough to come back from. After I hit the first one, it became a lot easier. My shots were just going in."

On being on the bench at the end of the game...

"We all wanted to be in there. We made sure that we were still cheering all of those guys on from the bench. On the bench you are able to see a lot of things. We were able to coach up some of the younger guys."

On if he wanted the ball at the end of regulation...

"I definitely wanted the ball. My teammates were telling me to go get the ball. They gave me the confidence that I needed to make those shots."

Eric Atkins • Junior • Guard

On Jerian Grant on play at end of regulation...

"After what he did in regulation, I think from there I thought that we were going to win the game no matter what."

    On how you feel...

"Tired. I feel great that we won the game. I'm not surprised we won. I'm surprised that it took that long, but I'm excited for everybody that stepped up tonight."

    On explaining this game..

"This is totally new. How we came back in regulation to five overtimes, it is unreal. I'm just happy that we got out of there with a win."

    On playing with validation...

"I think we were looking for that signature big win for us. I think Louisville is a great team and getting one tonight is huge. I just am really excited right now."

On how big what Garrett [Sherman] gave in overtime...

"Huge. We kind of stalled on offense a little bit in one of the overtimes, and [Garrett] Sherman really gave us that lift. We were able to go to the post to him and he was really showing off out there. He did a great job scoring for us."

Cameron Biedscheid • Freshman • Forward

On staying in it and not giving up...

"It was just our will to win. Coach Brey really fills us with that every game, no matter who we play. Not even anticipating overtime, just wanting to go out there and win the game. Even if everyone fouled out and we played with four, we would still go out there and compete and be aggressive with the will to win."

    On line-up in overtime...

"With the game that long, people get tired and things happen. Sometimes the passion and emotion of the game, people fall asleep on offense and defense on certain plays. Our main goal was to go out there, execute and compete."

On crowd getting you through the game...

"I think we have the best crowd of any college basketball school. I think we have great fans. They help us tremendously throughout the game. Even when we are on defense and the other team is shooting free throws, they really help us out by making them miss free throws. They also help us get into the game."

Zach Auguste • Freshman • Forward

On Jerian Grant's performance at the end...

"I was shocked, but at the same time I was so hyped up. I knew I needed to get back on defense and finish out the game."

On playing with four fouls for a long time...

"The coaches just kept reminding me to play smart, but to play physical as well."

    Louisville Head Coach Rick Pitino

    Opening Statement...

"It was a typical Notre Dame-Louisville game. They made some just incredible shots. I can't fault our defense. We were on them. Their shots were incredible so we've got to give them a lot of credit because I've never seen shots like that and I've been coaching a long, long time. We made a few mental mistakes down the stretch by forcing the issue when we had the lead, but sometimes when you're a bad foul shooting team at times it's not the worse thing in the world to get two points. I'm proud of our guys. It was a five-overtime game. Hopefully we'll learn from it."

    Louisville Player Quotes

Chane Behanan • Sophomore • Forward

On whether he could appreciate the game even though they lost...

"Yeah you have got to love games like this. Just for the simple fact that every time they meet (ND and Louisville), it's always overtime. The strongest will survive. They were a great team tonight and made a lot of big shots. Give credit to the Grant kid. He's a tremendous player, and he held his team up."

On how he was able to score a career high...

"Just give it your all. The season is starting to come to an end. I just block everything out, on the outside, and just get the job done."

On players stepping up for those who fouled out...

"Everybody just has to be ready to get their number called in games like this. Everybody that came in that was not expected to play gave strong minutes ... We just could not pull it out. I do not know why."

On Coach Pitino's message to the team after the game...

"Good game. They were the better team. Basically, it is what it is."
