Notre Dame Coach Mike Brey Quotes

    On UCLA making 14 Three-pointers...
"They were a tough team, they shot very well, they played very well, and any time you play a team that makes 14 three's, you are going to have a tough game. 14 three's is a lot of threes and we had a tough time getting back into the game because of that."

On Chris Thomas and the assist/points record with Sherman Douglas and Gary Payton...
"He is a powerful asset and has really been one heck of a player for us and we are going to miss him next year. But, that is just amazing company and an amazing statistic that he is now a part of, but I don't think he is thinking much about that right now. As a captain I think he is trying to figure out how to get his team ready for Rutgers this week."

    On the loss...
"We are very disappointed and I think you have to give UCLA a lot of credit, they played very well, they have a very good point guard and shot the ball very well.

    On non-conference games...
"Our goal has always been to have a winning record in league play and we have a chance to do that against Rutgers. Non-conference games like this against very tough teams help us to prepare for those. But, I am still disappointed that we lost and I always felt like we were one steal or one rebound away from coming back."

    Senior Guard Chris Thomas

    On the game...
'We didn't shoot the ball well and we didn't guard well. They had wide-open looks and were able to execute well. They are an offensive-minded team, so when a team doesn't guard them, they play really well."

On defensive effort in the game today...
"We've had trouble guarding people this whole week. It starts with me; it starts with the point guard. I just need to get in to people more like I was earlier in the season and just establish a defensive identity."

On what is next for the Irish...
"We need to finish strong at home. We need to come in and be ready to guard. That's what is going to get us into the tourney - getting down on the defensive end. "

    On UCLA's large lead...
"In the first half, they just took a lot out of us. We had opportunities; we would get steals and just turn it right back over and make careless plays, and just didn't get down on the defensive end. I think there is something to look forward too, though, because we finished the game strong."

    Junior Guard Chris Quinn...

On what the Irish need to improve...
"We have to get better defensively and just get back here and play. I think that's all we can do - improve our defense and be ready to compete."

    On playing a non-conference opponent...
"It shouldn't be difficult for us at this point. We know what our goals are in regards to the post season and we should have been able to come out there with the intensity we needed."

On why this is a big win for UCLA...
"This is a great win for us, to come in here and play against a very good team that has beaten UCONN, Villanova, and Boston College this year. We're playing our best basketball right now, and that's what you want to be doing at this time of year."

    On UCLA's defense...
"We played great defense. Our doubling of the post was probably something they didn't expect, because Torin Francis only averages about ten points per game. But it helped us be aggressors, which is how we want to be on the road."

On the leadership of freshman forward Josh Shipp...
"Josh Shipp's two big three-point goals were big in the first half. He played on a bad ankle and played thirty-two minutes. He really stepped it up for his team. I am really proud of him."

On the advantages and disadvantages of traveling to play a big game on national TV...
"I don't think the team was thrilled with all the traveling last week, but the good news is that ninety percent of the United States of America got to see this on CBS today. A lot of people will get a chance to see our team play, and our players have to feel good about how they performed."

    Freshman Guard Jordan Farmar

    On the Bruins' shooting effort...
"We shot pretty well, but more importantly we played great defense and we shared the ball. We are shooting better because we are getting better shots - we are getting better looks for our teammates. When we put egos aside and play for the winning cause that's what happens."

    On playing at Notre Dame...
"We were fired up. Someone said it felt like we were in a college basketball video game because they play [the Notre Dame fight song] all the time. It was a great atmosphere in here, and I'm glad we came out with a win."

    Senior Guard Brian Morrison

    On playing with the lead...
"I definitely helped our momentum throughout the game, especially going into the second half. We had that little letdown but we regrouped and played safe in the last three or four minutes. Every time they came back we had an answer."

On freshman forward Josh Shipp performing through his injury...
"It took a lot for him to be out there because I know he didn't feel so well. Hopefully he can get some rest because we are going to need him again."
