2007-2008 Notre Dame Men's Basketball
Notre Dame vs. St. Ambrose
Friday, November 2, 2007
Joyce Center - Notre Dame, IN

Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey
On the opening game of the season...
"We really needed to play some other guys. We have been beating up each other. I really liked the energy at the start of the game. We were running, we were defending."

On the play of opponent St. Ambrose...
"They are well coached. They ran their stuff and we had to prepare for it. They beat us on a few things, it gives us some great film to watch tomorrow because they ran their things and we can see how we adjusted to that."

On the play of Notre Dame C Rob Kurz...
"He has gotten better every year, gotten stronger. It is very fitting that he is our only captain."

On Notre Dame's team chemistry...
"We have a bunch of leaders on the team. Our junior class is full of leaders and Tory Jackson is a leader. There is a lot of leadership on the floor. This is an unselfish group, and they know how to play. Our eight returning players set a tone for the freshman to work hard."

On Notre Dame's performance in the game...
"We were not able to shoot as well as we can. I like the fact our distribution happened inside the (three-point) arc."

Junior Forward Zach Hillesland
On his role on the team...
"I'm here to do whatever my teammates need me to do: pass, cut, rebound, score here and there, and play an all-around game"

Sophomore Guard Tory Jackson
On how he has been influenced to be a leader for this season...
"Last year, we had Russell (Carter) and Colin (Falls). Being under them, you have to learn how to lead. By being a point guard, I have to make the right decisions. I grew up a leader and this year it's easy to lead with the group of guys we have because we have been together a year. The chemistry is nice and we all listen to each other."

On taking the blame for mistakes made...
"I would take the blame for a lot of the mistakes made. If I took the blame, it would make it easier for everyone else because I know what to do with it; I could just brush it off. So I just keep going out there and leading the team to victories."

On how the team deals with mistakes made...
"The older guys already know what to do; they understand. I'm just there to encourage them if they get frustrated. If one guy can't do it, I'm there to help him."

Senior Forward Rob Kurz
On being a captain this year...
"It's a great honor to know your teammates elected you a captain. I'm happy to be a part of a team with such a great bunch of guys."

On where the team stands...
"We have to be more physical and can't allow any second-chance opportunities, but our defensive pressure and rotations were good. We are going to get better and better and understand more and more as the season goes on."

Junior Guard Kyle McAlarney
On his first game back...
"The high point of my night was getting introduced in the starting lineup. My emotion really came out then, but I didn't want to make it about me tonight."

On what he has learned...
"I have realized that this is all just a game and to go out there and have fun because there are so many more important things in life. That really helped me out there tonight with my nerves. I wasn't nervous out there, so I just went out and played."
