The Citadel vs. Notre Dame Post-Game Quotes November 19, 2006, Joyce Center, Notre Dame, Ind.

Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey Quotes

On the flow of the game and the defense...
"It's a different style of play from what we usually see in December and from teams in our league. You're playing for the entire shot clock almost every time, so we had to be patient defensively. We had to work for thirty seconds every possession. And there aren't as many offensive possessions. You don't get as many attempts. I thought for the first half we were in very good defensively, we were in position, we moved as a unit"

On offensive penetration pulling the Citadel out of the zone...
"I thought we did a really good job getting the ball inside against their zone early. In fact, we may have done a better job getting the ball inside against the zone than we did against man today. We posted the big guy. We got great energy when we substituted off the bench. It gave us a thrust when we came in with those guys, also."

On the production of the big guys...
"He [Harangody] is a special young man. He comes right in, gets the three-point play. He has a great feel for the game and great hands. He can really score with his back to the basket. He's a heck of a passer. And he makes plays in the open court that don't shock us because we see it in practice. He's been very, very good. I think he's confident. We'll keep him confident. We got some other guys some minutes tonight. I thought Zach [Hillesland] was pretty solid, just guarding and getting his hands on stuff and handling the ball and feeding the post. He continues to give us a rhythm out there."

The Citadel Head Coach Ed Conroy

On the game overall...
"Well first off, obviously I'm not very pleased with the way my basketball team came out in the first half. I thought Notre Dame did an excellent job, and I commend them. I thought they came out, and they were definitely the aggressors. They knocked us backwards and they were much more physical than us inside. They had good focus as well; they came out and they knocked down their shots, they had good rhythm to their offense, and I think that threw our guys back a little bit."

On preparing to play Notre Dame...
"It's nothing we didn't expect coming into the game. I was impressed with them on tape, and I knew they could do those things. Obviously, they had a great size advantage against us and those type of things, so we knew they were more physical than us."

On changes the team made at halftime...
"All I talked to our guys about at halftime was when you are out-sized and out-manned, you must deliver the first blow. You can't let them walk across the lane, and if they knock you, they're going to knock you backwards and get great looks underneath the basket. That's all we tried to do the second half, we tried to get into our press, which we wanted to do the first half as well, but it's hard to do that when you make five field goals. When we got into our press, I thought we were more aggressive trying to post up and screen and do all those things and caused them to foul us a few more times. We executed a little better when we'd take it out of bounds... just little things like that. We were able to come back a little bit in the second half, and their rhythm was off a little bit. The game was obviously won early in the first half, and that's a credit to them - they did a great job coming out and executing."

Notre Dame Player Quotes

Freshman Forward Luke Harangody
On outscoring The Citadel in the first half...
"I think it had a lot to do with playing great defense in the first half. We kind of let down during the second half, but we played amazing defense in the first half, that's a lot of credit to our defense."

On the upcoming schedule...
"I'm getting ready for the big games coming up after Thanksgiving break. It should be a good challenge for us."

Junior Forward Rob Kurz
On consistent play...

"Good teams have to be consistent all the time. We have to be consistent in both halves. We did some great things in the first half, and like coach said we got a little bit disinterested in the second half. That will not be good enough in the coming games."

On Luke Harangody's play...
"He's an offence force off the bench, I'm sure he'll continue to do that for us. He does a great job down low, getting good position, and finishing. They started doubling the post when he saw what he was doing down there. I'm not surprised at anything from him anymore."

Senior Guard Collin Falls
On the second half pace...

"I think Coach Cross was teaching us we've got to put our foot on the pedal, we can't slow down. Offensively you can't complain because shots were going in, but the defensive end kind of looked sloppy. It shouldn't be hard to keep the interest up, I mean we're playing college basketball. It's something we're going to have get better at. We're going to have to bring it for 40 minutes in the rest of our games."
