Irish Down The Citadel in Season Opener

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Senior forward Pat Garrity scored 18 points and collected nine
rebounds to lead the Notre Dame basketball team to a
season-opening 72-53 win over The Citadel on Monday night
before 9,170 fans at the Joyce Center. Garrity was one of four
Irish players in doubles figures as junior center Phil Hickey
recorded his second career double-double with 15 points and a
game-high 11 rebounds.
Junior guard Antoni Wyche had 14 points and four rebounds while
freshman point guard Martin Ingelsby, starting his first
collegiate game, scored 11 points with four assists.
Notre Dame got out of the gates quickly, scoring the first tean
points of the game and led by as many as 16 points in the first
half, 34-18 with 3:11 left. The Irish held a 37-24 halftime
The pesky Bulldogs managed to keep it close in the second
stanza and closed the Irish lead to eight points, 43-35, with
14:52 left to play. Notre Dame pulled away at the end and used
a 14-6 run late in the game to take a 65-47 lead with 3:19
Virgil Stevens was the leading scorer for The Citadel with 15
points while Jonathan Kunz had nine.
