Irish Fall to Marquette
MILWAUKEE -- Aaron Hutchins scored 19 points and provided nine assists as Marquette
defeated Notre Dame 72-48 Friday, allowing the Irish to convert only 27 percent of their first-half field shots.
Marquette (2-0) also got 11 points from Mike Bargen and 10 from Marcus West. Notre Dame (1-1) was led by Pat Garrity
with 16 points.
Marquette led 34-21 at halftime, expanding the advantage to 40-21 and to 47-27 with 16 minutes left on a basket by West.
Hutchins scored 10 points in the first half. Notre Dame pulled within 16-14 on a basket by Garrity with just under 12
minutes left in the half.
Marquette countered with a 10-point run capped by a pair of West free throws with 6:30 remaining to lead 26-14.
Garrity, last year's Big East player of the year, started a Notre Dame-record 86th straight game and went into ninth place on
the school's career scoring list.
He now has one more start than Gary Novak and John Paxson.
He needed just 13 points to pass Elmer Bennett, who had been ninth with 1,488 points.
