Irish Win on A Buzzer Beater, 78-77
NOTRE DAME, Ind. --- Sophomore guard Keith Friel hit a three-point field goal at the buzzer to lead Notre Dame to a 78-77 exhibtion victory on Sunday night at the Joyce Center over Athletes in Action.
The field goal by Friel concluded a comeback by the Iris that saw them outscore AIA 11-4 in the final 40.9 second of the game. Freshman Martin Ingelsby hit on a three with 17.5 seconds left to make the score 74-72 AIA and, following two David Daniels free throws for the Athletes, Irish junior Antoni Wyche hit a three with 9.6 seconds left to cut the deficit to 76-75. William Cunningham made one of two free throws for AIA with 8.4 seconds left to make the score 77-75 and set up Friel's winning shot.
Senior forward Pat Garrity had a game-high 23 points with 12 rebounds while senior forward Derek Manner had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Junior center Phil Hickey had 16 points and nine rebounds. Landon Hackim led AIA with 19 points while former Notre Dame guard Ryan Hoover had seven.
