Garrity Leads Irish Past Rutgers
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Pat Garrity scored 32 points, including 10 of 10
from the free throw line, to lead Notre Dame to a 91-76 Big East win Sunday
over Rutgers.
The Big East scoring leader had 21 in the first half as the Irish (8-5, 2-3
in the league) built a 20-point lead with 7:05 left. Rutgers (7-6, 1-4) was
unable to make a serious run on the Irish the rest of the way.
Notre Dame broke away with a 24-5 run over a 5:50 span, taking a 41-21 lead
with 7:05 to play in the half. Notre Dame led 49-32 at halftime as the Irish
hit 57 percent of their first-half shots.
Notre Dame shot 54 percent for the game, and 56 percent (9-16) on
3-pointers. The Irish hit all 11 of their second-half free throws.
Garrity was 10-18 from the field, including two for four on 3-pointers, and
collected seven assists and four rebounds. Phil Hickey had 14 for the Irish in
the first half and finished with 16. Keith Friel had 12 points, all on
3-pointers, and Antoni Wyche had 11.
Rob Hodgson led Rutgers with 22 points. Earl Johnson scored 16, Eric Clark
had 13, Geoff Billet scored 11 and Jeff Greer had 10.
Notre Dame held Rutgers to 49 percent shooting from the field and 37 percent
from beyond the 3-point line.
