Pitt Too Much for Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Vonteego Cummings scored 20 points and Isaac Hawkins added 19 to lead Pittsburgh to a 72-61 victory over Notre Dame on Tuesday.

Pittsburgh (6-4, 1-2 Big East) established a 16-point lead with nine minutes to go and then held off an Irish rally for the win.

Both teams started out slow, but an 8-2 run late in the first half gave the Panthers a 32-27 halftime lead. Pittsburgh never trailed again.

Notre Dame managed to tie the game at 40 on a layup by Phil Hickey. The Panthers followed with an 18-2 run to seal the win.

The Irish (7-5, 1-3) were led by Pat Garrity's 19 points and 15 rebounds. Hickey added 15 points.

Notre Dame was hampered by Pittsburgh's changing defenses, which forced 20 Irish turnovers, including 11 steals.

The Panthers overcame a 12-of-32 shooting performance (38 percent), while Notre Dame shot 48 percent despite a 2-for-17 effort from the 3-point line.
