PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Junior Jamel Thomas scored a career-high 32 points
and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Providence past Notre Dame 77-62 Saturday in
the regular-season finale for both teams.
Pat Garrity scored 26 points for Notre Dame (13-13, 7-11 Big East), with
teammate Phil Hickey adding 12. John Linehan had 10 points and made seven
steals for the Friars (12-15, 7-11). Justin Farley also had 10 for Providence.
Thomas made two straight 3-pointers to spark a 10-4 surge in the first four
minutes of the second half to give the Friars a 50-37 lead. Notre Dame, despite
14 points from Garrity in the second half, never got closer than seven points
the rest of the game.
The fighting Irish, who normally shoot 45.2 percent from the field, were
held to 8-for-24 shooting (33 percent) in the second half. The Friars also
forced 21 turnovers and stole the ball 15 times.
The Friars, who never trailed, took a 26-13 lead at 8:04 in the first half
on a 3-pointer by Thomas. Garrity warmed up and scored 10 points in the final
six minutes of the half, including a 30-foot 3-pointer two seconds before
intermission, to cut the Friar margin to 37-33 at the break.
Providence College, which averaged 41.2 percent from the field, shot
29-for-56 (51.8 percent).
