Irish Outlast Miami to Remain Unbeaten in ACC
Notre Dame (15-2, 4-0 ACC) has made a habit of winning ACC games late to begin conference play and Thursday evening was no exception, as the Irish defeated Miami (11-4, 1-2 ACC) by a final score of 67-62 in Coral Gables, Florida.

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (16-11, 6-8 ACC) looks to keep the momentum of a key road victory at Boston College alive on Saturday afternoon into an ESPN Big Monday matchup with Miami (18-8, 7-7 ACC) at Purcell Pavilion. The Irish are hoping to play themselves back into NCAA tournament consideration and await the return of two key injured players - Bonzie Colson, D.J. Harvey- who hope to return by the end of the season.

QUICK FACTS

  • Notre Dame enters its third and final Saturday - Monday turnaround of the season, maintaining its status as the only ACC team with all three Saturday - Monday turnarounds requiring a travel leg. The Irish have faced Virginia Tech (H) and Duke (A), Florida State (H) and North Carolina (A) and traveled to Boston College for a victory on Sunday before Monday night’s match up with Miami.
  • The Irish are looking to complete a sweep of the Saturday - Monday turnaround this year for the first time, as they went 0-2 on the first challenge, then 1-1 vs. Florida State and North Carolina.
  • Matt Farrell has 28 assists (7.0 pg) over his past four games and was able to post seven assists in his career-high 37 point game at Boston College.
  • T.J. Gibbs has scored in double figures in a career-best 15 consecutive games dating back Dec. 21, 2017.
  • Martinas Geben has scored in double figures in four consecutive games, one shy of his career-best mark of five straight from earlier this season. Over the past four games, Geben has shot .719 from the field (23-32).
  • Notre Dame has hit 10 or more 3FGs in each of its past four games, including a season-high 30 in the two match ups with Boston College in 2017-18.

FARRELL POSTS HISTORICAL SHOOTING PERFORMANCE

For a career 40-percent three-point field goal shooter, it was only a matter of time before Matt Farrell rebounded from a sub par shooting effort at North Carolina on Feb. 12 (1-12 3FG). The recovery came fast and furious in his next game at Boston College on Feb. 17.

Farrell would eventually score 37 points against the Eagles (the team he orginally committed to before a coaching change prompted him to reopen his recruiting and eventually signing with Notre Dame) and finished 10-of-12 from three point range.

The shooting performance ranks among the best in school history - here is where it ranks in the Irish record books:

FARRELL AMONG MOST PROLIFIC SHOOTERS IN NOTRE DAME HISTORY

After seeing limited minutes during his first two seasons with the Irish, senior guard Matt Farrell worked on his game and has established himself as one of the best three point shooters in the history of the program.

Farrell is fifth all-time - and just the sixth Irish player - to average over 2.5 made three-pointers per game started -

NOTRE DAME - MIAMI SERIES HISTORY

Notre Dame and Miami will be meeting for the 22nd time on Monday night, with the Irish holding a 11-10 advantage in the series.

The Irish - Hurricanes history cannot be much more balanced, as the Irish are 5-4 at Purcell Pavilion against Miami, 5-5 at Miami, 1-1 at neutral sites and 3-3 in ACC competition.

Each of the previous five meetings between the two teams featured one team ranked, including the 70-63 victory by No. 11/9 Notre Dame in the 2015 ACC Quarterfinal - the first of three victories earned in Notre Dame’s run to the 2015 ACC Championship.

NOTRE DAME VS. MIAMI - BY THE NUMBERS

1

More week of game action expected to be missed by senior Bonzie Colson after fracturing a bone in his foot on Friday, December 29. Colson was averaging 21.4 points, 10.4 rebounds and over two steals and two blocks per game - the only college player to hit those averages this year and the only player to reach those averages since Sports Reference started tracking statistics in the 1992-93 season.

2

Notre Dame leads the NCAA in two statistical categories - fewest fouls (354) and personal fouls per game (13.1).

3

Senior guard Matt Farrell ranks third in the ACC (all games) in assists with a 5.45 average. While he doesn’t qualify for the ACC-only games list (must play 75% of league games), his 5.78 average would lead the conference.

3.32

Three-point field goals made per game for Matt Farrell, first in the ACC and 15th in the nation.

10

School-record matching three-point field goals at Boston College for Matt Farrell. Farrell started the game nine-for-nine from three-point field goal range and scored a career-high and Notre Dame player ACC-game high 37 points in the victory (see page 3 for more details).

11.3

Sophomore guard T.J. Gibbs has improved his scoring by 11.6 points per game this season (4.7 to 16.0), the second-best mark in the ACC.

14

Both T.J. Gibbs and senior guard Matt Farrell are on a streak of 14 consecutive games with at least one three-point field goal, which is tied for fifth in the ACC. Farrell’s career-best streak of 31 games ended earlier this season vs. St. Francis Brooklyn. Farrell has hit at least one three pointer in 44 of his last 45 games played.

26

Combined games missed due to injury by Bonzie Colson (13), Matt Farrell (5) and freshman forward D.J. Harvey (8) - three of the top six players on the Irish roster. Both Colson and Harvey hope to return by the end of the regular season.

98

The senior class of Bonzie Colson, Matt Farrell, Martinas Geben, Matt Gregory and Austin Torres (graduate student) have set the mark as the all-time winningest senior class in Notre Dame basketball history.

119.7

Offensive rating for senior forward Martinas Geben according to KenPom.com, the ninth-best in the league with at least 20% of possessions used.

968

Career points scored for Matt Farrell who is on pace to become the 64th Notre Dame player to reach the 1,000 point milestone.
