Strong Second Half Leads Irish to Victory Over Boston College
No. 25/20 Notre Dame (20-7, 9-5 ACC) shook off a sluggish first half by outscoring Boston College (9-18, 2-12 ACC) 45-27 in the second stanza to give the Irish their third straight win by a final score of 84-76.

NOTRE DAME vs. BOSTON COLLEGE SERIES HISTORY:  

Notre Dame and Boston College will be meeting for the 29th time on Wednesday evening and the eighth time as ACC opponents. The Irish have won all seven meetings between the two teams since Notre Dame joined the ACC for the 2013-14 season. Notre Dame also won the last meeting between the two teams as Big East Conference members in 2005, giving the Irish an eight-game win streak over the Eagles.

Boston College and Georgia Tech are Notre Dame’s two designated repeat opponents each season in the ACC. Notre Dame rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat Boston College 84-76 in Conte Forum on Feb. 14, 2017.

SENIOR CLASS OF ‘WINNERS’:

Seniors V.J. Beachem and Steve Vasturia will play their final home games at Purcell Pavilion on Wednesday night.

“Steve and V.J. are two of the greatest winners in the history of this basketball program,” head coach Mike Brey said after the victory over Georgia Tech on February 26, 2017.

Beachem and Vasturia have combined to help the Irish achieve -

  • Back-to-Back NCAA Elite Eight Apperances in 2015 and 2016
  • School-record two-year win total of 56 in 2014-15 and 2015-16
  • School-record three-year win total of 78 in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17
  • Ninety-Three total victories, the fifth-most in a four-year span at Notre Dame (see ‘Winningest Class At Notre Dame?’ note below).
  • The first conference championship in program history - 2015 ACC Championship

In the Notre Dame record book:

Steve Vasturia - 2nd FT% (.850), 4th consecutive starts (110), 5th games played (130), 19th assists (310), 21st 3FG% (.368), 29th scoring (1,326). Only second Notre Dame player (Chris Thomas, 2001-05) to score 1,300 points with 300 assists and shoot over .850 from the free throw line.

V.J. Beachem - 13th 3FG% (.404), 14th games played (125), 15th in blocked shots (74), 45th in scoring (1,132). 

WINNINGEST CLASS AT NOTRE DAME?

The 2016-17 senior class of Steve Vasturia, V.J. Beachem and Austin Torres (Torres will return for a fifth-year of eligibility in 2017-18) could become the winningest class in Notre Dame basketball history.

The 16-17 class has compiled 88 wins over the past four years, putting the all-time mark of 97 by the 2012-13 group in reach (Notre Dame has at least 13 games remaining this season, including a game in the ACC Championship and a post season apperance).

Senior forward Bonzie Colson, a candidate for the Wooden Award, Naismith Award and the ACC Player of the Year, has posted seven 20-point, 10-rebound performances this year. All seven of those performances have come against Power 5 Conference teams.

FARRELL STEPS UP IN THE SECOND HALF:

Junior guard Matt Farrell has established a pattern of solid play in the second half of Notre Dame’s games in the ACC. Farrell has scored double-figures in eight of 16 second halves played in the ACC this season, including a season-high 14 in the victory over Georgia Tech.

Other notable second halves for Farrell in ACC play this season include 12 points and three assists vs. Clemson, 11 points and seven assists at Florida State  and 11 points with four assists vs. Wake Forest.

Notre Dame, which is in the running to earn a double bye in the ACC Tournament entering the final week of conference play, has earned a double bye in five of the last seven seasons. The Irish advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament in each season they earned a double bye. See page 10 for more details.
