NOTRE DAME, Ind. - University of Notre Dame sophomore forward Troy Murphy (Morristown, N.J.) was named to the Associated Press All-America first team on Monday. Murphy becomes the first Notre Dame player to earn AP first team honors since Adrian Dantley in 1976.
Murphy was joined on the five-man team by Cincinnati center Kenyon Martin, Iowa State forward Marcus Fizer, Indiana guard A.J. Guyton and Texas center Chris Mihm.
Murphy has also been named a second-team All-American this year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and a first-team All-American by The Basketball News. Murphy was named the 1999-2000 BIG EAST Conference player-of-the-year and was a unanimous first-team all-BIG EAST pick.
Murphy leads the Irish in scoring at 22.8 points per game (ninth in the country) and 10.8 rebounds (sixth in the country). He was the first player to lead the BIG EAST in scoring and rebounding during the conference season and currently leads the BIG EAST in overall games in that category.
He currently has 1,248 career points - the 22nd-highest in school history.
The Irish currently have a record of 18-14 and play host to Michigan in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament on Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST in a game that will be televised by ESPN.
