Men's Basketball Announces Captains For 2002-03 Campaign
July 25, 2002 Notre Dame, Ind. - Seniors Matt Carroll (Horsham, Pa.), Jere Macura (Split, Croatia) and Dan Miller (Mt. Holly, N.J.) have been named captains for the upcoming 2002-03 men's basketball season. Carroll, a three-year starter at guard, averaged 14.1 points and 4.8 rebounds last season as he led the Irish to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the second straight year and a final 22-11 record. He closed out the 2001-02 campaign averaging 20.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in post-season play (two BIG EAST and two NCAA tournament contests). Carroll scored 20 points in each of Notre Dame's final four games, which marked the first time in his career that he recorded four straight 20-point outings. He scored in double figures in 24 of the 32 contests he played in last season and recorded a double double on two occasions. Carroll became the first Notre Dame player to hit for all six of his three point attempts against Tennessee-Chattanooga in the second round of the Hawaii-Pacific Thanksgiving Classic (a 97-84 Irish victory). The 6-6, 212-pound guard heads into his final season with 1,186 points and a career scoring average of 12.0 points. He has played in 99 of 100 career games and has made 91 starts in those contests. Carroll stands third all-time in three-point field goals made with 202 and needs just 58 to become the school's career leader in that category. Macura averaged 4.1 points and 2.8 rebounds during his junior season and played in 17 of 33 contests. He started the first two games of the '01-'02 campaign and recorded back-to-back career-highs of 14 points and 15 points in wins over New Hampshire and Cornell, respectively. The 6-9, 230-pound forward has played in 76 games and has made four career starts. Miller will don an Irish uniform for the first time in '02-'03. He sat out all of last season after transferring from the University of Maryland following three seasons with the Terrapins. The 6-8, 223-pound guard/forward played in 104 games during his career at the College Park, Md., school and started 38 of those contests. As a sophomore in 1999-2000, he started all 34 games he played and averaged career bests of 8.5 points and 2.9 rebounds. Miller is one of three former McDonald's All-Americans on the Irish roster this season (the other two are sophomore point guard Chris Thomas and freshman forward Torin Francis).
"I am pleased that Matt, Jere and Dan will serve as our captains this season," Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey says. "Their leadership is going to have a great impact on this year's team and I am confident that they are going to embrace their roles as team captains. They saw last year how important good leadership means to the morale and chemistry of a team and how far it goes in determining success from one year to the next."
