NOTRE DAME WRAPS UP ITS EXHIBITION SCHEDULE WITH CARDINAL STRITCH

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team completes its 2017-18 preseason exhibition schedule on Tuesday, November 6, 2017, against Cardinal Stritch at 7 p.m. ET in Purcell Pavilion. The Irish are 2-0 thus far during the exhibition season with a 97-57 win over Holy Cross College on October 21 and an 88-59 victory over Bethel College on Friday, November 3.

Notre Dame will begin the 2017-18 season on Saturday, November 11, against DePaul as the Blue Demons dedicate WinTrust Arena in downtown Chicago.

CARDINAL STRITCH

Cardinal Stritch is a Roman Catholic university located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The university takes its name from Cardinal Samuel Stritch, who served as the Archbishop of Milwaukee from 1930-39 and eventually the Archbishop of Chicago (1940-58) and Pro-Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of Fatih in Rome, Italy.

The Wolves are an NAIA school (becoming the third NAIA team that Notre Dame has faced this exhibition season) and compete in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). Cardinal Stritch boasts a strong basketball tradition, including a NCAA Division III championship in 1987 and was a five-time National Little College Great Lakes District men’s basketball champion from 1983 to 1987.

Stritch also won the NAIA Division 2 National Championship in 2013, the same season the Irish and Wolves last met - a 70-56 Notre Dame exhibition win in the 2012-13 preseason.

The Wolves finished 14-16 and 10-10 in the CCAC last season.

Stritch has played three games already this season, defeating Maranatha Baptist University 71-42 on October 31, then suffering a pair of losses to Indiana University East (72-85 on Nov. 3) and Clarke University (72-87 on Nov. 4).

Senior forward Bonzie Colson has been named one of 32 players in contention for the 2018 Oscar Robertson Award, given to the nation’s best player by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).

Colson, named the ACC Preseason Player of the Year and a candidate for the Karl Malone Trophy (top power forward in college basketball, given by the Naismith Hall of Fame) is a consensus first-team preseason All-American. He joins Louisville’s Deng Adel, Duke’s Grayson Allen, Duke’s Marvin Bagley II, North Carolina’s Joel Berry II, Miami’s Bruce Brown Jr., Duke’s Wendell Carter Jr. and Duke’s Trevon Duval as the eight Atlantic Coast Conference players on the Robertson watch list.

EXHIBITION STAND OUTS

While none of the statistics or outcomes of Notre Dame’s exhibition games count toward career or season statistics, there have been some notable performances in the team’s two exhibition victories thus far.

Senior Martinas Geben is averaging a double-double and leading the team in points per game over the two exhibition contests (16.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg). Junior Rex Pflueger has been all over the boxscores, averaging 11.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 3.5 apg and 3.5 spg.

Senior Bonzie Colon has been his traditional steady self, averaging 16.0 ppg and 12.0 rpg.
