D.J. Harvey Is Irish

Nov. 9, 2016

University of Notre Dame head men’s basketball coach Mike Brey has announced the signing of D.J. Harvey, a 6-6, 185-pound guard from Bowie, Maryland and DeMatha High School to a National Letter of Intent to enroll at Notre Dame and take the court for the Fighting Irish for the 2017-18 season.

“We have recruited D.J. Harvey for over three years and have always felt he is a great fit,” Brey said.

“First off all, he comes from great high school (DeMatha) and AAU programs (Team Takeover). I love that he plays in the Washington, D.C., area and the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, which is incredibly competitive.

“He is a big guard with a complete skill set. He has a feel for the game and a great shooting stroke. Add in his athletic ability and high basketball I.Q. and we feel he will fit really well into our system. He has been our number-one target for two years and we are thrilled that he will be joining us.”

Harvey averaged 15.4 points, seven rebounds and four assists as a junior at DeMatha High School, one of the top-ranked prep teams in the nation. A consensus top-50 four-star ranked player, Harvey moved from Huntsville, Alabama to the D.C. area before his prep career began.

When Harvey started his first game at DeMatha as a freshman, he became the first Stag to do so since NBA Hall of Famer, former Irish All-American and Purcell Pavilion Ring of Honor inductee Adrian Dantley in 1969-70.

The DeMatha High School connection is strong in the Notre Dame men’s basketball program. Brey, 2015 Consensus All-American and current Chicago Bull Jerian Grant and Irish associate head coach Rod Balanis are all alumni of DeMatha. Brey was an assistant coach under legendary DeMatha head coach Morgan Wootten from 1982-87. Sid Catlett, a standout power forward for the Irish from 1968-71 and Bob Whitmore, 1966-69, who was in attendance when Harvey signed his letter of intent this morning, are also is DeMatha graduates.
