Notre Dame men's basketball coach Mike Brey likens Sunday afternoon's matchup with in-state foe Indiana State to that of an ACC matchup.

Immediately following last Sunday's 80-49 victory over Stetson that pushed the Irish to 2-0 on the season, Brey spoke very little about his team's win over the Hatters, but addressed more his squad's mental and physical preparation throughout this past week leading up to Sunday's contest.

The Irish return to the hardwood for the first time since the victory over Stetson a week ago. The Sycamores are 1-1 and are coming off a 96-95 setback on Thursday night at Belmont. Indiana State saw its 49-33 halftime advantage erased as the Sycamores were outscored 63-46 in the second half.

Sunday's contest between Notre Dame and Indiana State will mark the third meeting ever between the Indiana schools. The Irish have won both games and the most recent in the series took place Nov. 30, 2010, as the Irish came away with an 81-72 victory.

For the second consecutive season, Indiana State finished with an 18-15 mark a year ago and lost in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament 68-52 to eventual runner-up Iowa on the road. The Sycamores play in the rugged Missouri Valley Conference and were 9-8 in conference regular-season play a year ago. Among the nine league wins for Indiana State were victories at home against Creighton and eventual NCAA Final Four participant Wichita State.

Brey is well aware that this is an important early non-conference game for his squad.

"This for us is like an ACC game," Brey says. "They're a talented older group who knows how to play together. This is going to be a good test for us. I've talked to our guys all week about their mental preparation for this contest. Despite the kind of quirk in the schedule (with having a week off), we were able to bring in referees and scrimmage on Wednesday; I think that was really beneficial for us."
