Bob Chmiel is in his second season as the coordinator of football operations for the Notre Dame program after serving an an Irish assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the previous four seasons.
Chmiel continues to direct all administrative aspects of the Irish recruiting process, as he did while serving as the recruiting coordinator in those four years. Chmiel also handles a wide range of other duties in conjunction with head coach Bob Davie and the Notre Dame program.
Though he didn't join the Irish staff until after the '94 season had begun, he played a major role in bringing the current senior class - ranked among the best nationally - to Notre Dame. Chmiel also drew solid reviews for his last two freshman classes for the Irish, the current junior and sophomore classes.
Chmiel worked with the Irish tight ends from 1994-96, tutoring current Detroit Lion player Pete Chryplewicz who led the team with 27 receptions in '96.
The 1971 Illinois-Chicago graduate had been serving as an assistant to the athletic director at the University of Michigan in '94-'95 following six years in which he served as football recruiting coordinator for the Wolverines. The recruiting classes he brought to Ann Arbor were among the best in the country. The Chicago native originally served as a defensive assistant at Michigan under Bo Schembechler from 1981-84.
During his time at Michigan, the Wolverines played in six Rose Bowls (1981, '83, '89, '90, '91, '92), the 1981 Bluebonnet Bowl, the 1984 Sugar Bowl, the 1991 Gator Bowl and the 1993 Hall of Fame Bowl.
Chmiel coached linebackers and coordinated recruiting at Northern Illinois under Lee Corso in 1985-86, spent a year in 1987 as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Northwestern - before returning to Michigan in 1988.
A two-time letterwinner at Illinois-Chicago as a guard and fullback, Chmiel attended Fenwick High School in Chicago and returned to coach eight years there from 1972-79. He also spent a season as head coach at St. Joseph High School in Westchester, Ill., in 1980 prior to joining the Michigan staff in '81. He was elected to the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame in 1993.
Born Nov. 7, 1947, Chmiel and his wife, the former Anne Dufek (sister of former Michigan players Don and Billy Dufek and daughter of former Wolverine Don Dufek Sr.), are parents of three daughters - Mary Pat, Laura and Clare.
