    AS A SOPHOMORE: Began season as top backup at corner but moved into starting lineup at free safety beginning in fifth game of season vs. Stanford and ended up starting eight of last nine games, including vs. LSU in '97 Independence Bowl . . . made eight tackles vs. Cardinal . . . had 10 tackles in start vs. USC . . . came off bench vs. Navy, then returned as starter in final three games . . . had seven stops, a tackle for loss and pass broken up vs. West Virginia . . . had seven tackles vs. Hawaii . . . made nine tackles vs. LSU in Independence Bowl contest . . . made 185 regular-season special team appearances to rank second on squad in that category.

    AS A FRESHMAN: Played in all 11 games in '96 as top backup at cornerback behind regulars Allen Rossum and Ivory Covington . . . started vs. USC in '96 finale with Covington bothered by hamstring injury . . . earned a monogram (one of six rookies to win them), thanks in particular to his 125 special-team appearances . . . made three tackles vs. Washington, two vs. USC . . . broke up passes vs. USC and Washington and had tackles for loss in both those games as well . . wasted no time working his way into contributing position as first-year player.

    HIGH SCHOOL AND PERSONAL DATA: Caught 68 passes as senior in '95 for 863 yards and 11 TDs as two-way standout at Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg, S.C. . . . named to Super Southern 100 by Atlanta Journal-Constitution . . . had three interceptions and 50 tackles as secondary starter . . . career totals included 142 receptions for 1,875 yards and 23 TDs . . . made four interceptions to go with 35 tackles as junior . . . made 74 catches for 1,012 yards and 12 TDs in '94 . . . also competed in track . . . brother Dwayne is veteran starting cornerback for NFL San Diego Chargers . . . born 11-15-77 . . . full name is Deveron Alfredo Harper . . . enrolled in College of Business Administration with major in marketing.
