AS A SOPHOMORE: Played in 11 games in '98 (all but Navy) as reserve Irish wide receiver . . . made huge reception on fourth down vs. Purdue on 80-yard drive that brought Irish to within 30-28 in eventual victory . . . had 29-yard grab vs. Baylor . . . caught 27-yarder in reserve role in '99 Gator Bowl vs. Georgia Tech.
AS A FRESHMAN: Earned a monogram in '97 while seeing action in eight games as wide receiver backup . . . played vs. Michigan, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Navy, LSU (regular-season game), West Virginia and Hawaii - and again vs. LSU in '97 Independence Bowl . . . made catches for 27 yards vs. Michigan State, 32 vs. Boston College and 17 vs. Navy . . . did not see varsity action as rookie in '96.
HIGH SCHOOL AND PERSONAL DATA: Two-way standout at Starkville High School in Starkville, Miss. . . . helped team to 15-0 record and 4-A state championship as senior in '95 . . . named to Super Southern 100 by Atlanta Journal-Constitition . . . missed half the '95 season with knee injury . . . made four interceptions as free safety . . . had 389 all-purpose yards on 30 receptions as junior in '94 and while scoring six TDs, intercepting four passes as Starkville claimed state title that season as well . . . played basketball, baseball and ran track as sprinter . . . anchored 4x100 relay team that won state title as junior . . . born 10-13-77 . . . younger of two children . . . full name is James Michael Johnson . . . enrolled in College of Arts and Letters with majors in sociology and computer applications.
