Notre Dame Football Postgame Quotes

Oct. 2, 1999

Notre Dame Head Coach Bob Davie

On the game:
You had to like that one. It was a heck of a football game. I'm proud of this team. It doesn't get much more difficult that it was today at halftime. We really learned how to win a game. We've come back in each of the last three games and we realize you can't keep coming back and not winning.

On preparation for this game:
This week we told the team that sometimes it gets worse before it gets better. We knew we were not going to break through and win easily. Because of the way we won, I think we've become a pretty good football team.

On Jarious Jackson:
He told me before the game, ?Whatever it takes, if it takes an IV, I'm going to leave it all out there.'

On team's outlook:
We made a big deal that it's October and we're 0-0 this month. We said it's time to get back to Notre Dame football. At least in the second half, I think we did that.

On the importance of winning:
We played a really good football team and face a situation that we have seen each of the past three weeks and this time we won. We had to break through and win a game. I thought that our team put forth a tremendous effort in the second half, especially after falling behind.

Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops Quotes

Notre Dame performance in second half:
"They (Notre Dame) just whipped us. We did some good things early in the game but were not strong enough to finish. Their will to win was greater than ours."

On Jarious Jackson:
"He was a major factor and the difference in the game. He made us look foolish at times - missing tackles and giving up big runs."

On Brandon Daniels 229 yards on kick-off returns:
"We had some excellent returns on some great plays. It was our major factor in the first half. Brandon is a great football player."

On performance of Josh Heupel:
"It is not what Josh is capable of, but he has got to have people around him. We need to get people open and have some pass protection. Notre Dame did a great job against him. I don't know if I have seen four incompletions in a row since I have been at Oklahoma like Notre Dame forced on that last drive."

Notre Dame Player Quotes

Jarious Jackson

On the three-game losing streak:
It has been really frustrating the last couple of weeks and then to have the week off wasn't exciting.

On the game:
We came out and played today. We made a couple of mistakes but they have an outstanding kickoff return team. Those things killed us early but we came out in the second half and played hard.

On winning:
We just said before the game that we are going to get this victory no matter what it takes. If I have to get an IV in my arm, whatever. I have to go out and play as hard as possible. I just tried to go full speed every play.

Tony Fisher

On the opening drive:
"I think it set the tempo for the team. Coach Davie said that we needed to go out and set the tempo early in the game. We knew what we needed to do and we did it."

On the running game:
"We knew that we needed to establish a running game, and our back were against the wall. That was our main objective in the past weeks. It was crucial for us to establish a running game today if we wanted to win the game."

Jim Sanson

On his performance:
" I let my teammates down today. I was glad we got a win, but I did not do my part for the team. I have a lot of work to do this week, and I hope something good comes out of this. It gets really frustrating after awhile. I thought that things were going to turn around for me after last week. I just have to go out to practice, and continue working on my kicking."

Oklahoma Player Quotes

Receiver Damian Mackey

On the game:
We just didn't finish the game. They (Notre Dame) just went out there and played harder than us in the second half. We need to get together and regroup for next week.

On the offensive play:
They (Notre Dame) played well, but it was more our faults. We just didn't execute. We felt that we had some things open, some things that we could have done, but we just didn't do them. We need to catch the ball better.

Receiver Jarrail Jackson

On the final drive:
I definitely felt we had a chance to win, but we just didn't make the catches that we needed to make. This (loss) was hard.

On Coach Stoops' reaction:
He just told us we have to bounce back and play hard next week. He said that we have to play a full four quarters next time.
