NOTRE DAME POSTGAME NOTES

vs. Navy * Notre Dame Stadium * Notre Dame, Indiana * October 10, 2015

TEAM NOTES

  • The Irish improved to 76-12-1 all-time against Navy, including a 29-5 mark at Notre Dame Stadium. The teams will meet on Nov. 5, 2016, at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Florida.
  • Other than the 2012 season opener, this marks the first time since 2004 that Notre Dame has handed Navy its first loss of the year. The Midshipmen came into today's game at 4-0 and entered the Oct. 16, 2004, game at Giants Stadium at 5-0.
  • Notre Dame has outscored Navy 2,521-1,076 over 89 all-time meetings an average of 28.3-12.1 per game.
  • This is the fourth year in a row that the Irish have had a 100-yard rusher against Navy. Theo Riddick had 107 in 2012. Tarean Folston had 140 in 2013 and 149 in 2014. C.J. Prosise had 129 yards today.
  • Notre Dame has now outscored opponents 65-13 on the year in the third quarter after outscoring Navy 14-3 in today's penultimate stanza. Under head coach Brian Kelly, Notre Dame has allowed just 3.34 points per third quarter, which ranks as the best in the Football Bowl Subdivision since 2010.
  • The 84-yard TD drive by the Irish in the second quarter, capped by Will Fuller's 30-yard TD reception, was the 11th scoring drive this year for Notre Dame of at least 80 yards.
  • Notre Dame set a season high for points off of turnovers on its first opportunity alone when C.J. Prosise ran for a seven-yard TD after a Navy fumble and Justin Yoon converted the point-after attempt. The Irish did not score more than six points off turnovers in any of their first five contests and tallied just nine such points all season entering today.
  • The Irish collected a season-high three turnovers during today's game. Navy had turned the ball over just once through its first four games this fall.
  • The one-play, seven-yard, five-second TD drive in the second quarter by the Irish was Notre Dame's shortest TD drive since a one-play, six-yard, three-second drive, capped by a Tarean Folston TD run, on Oct. 11, 2014, vs. North Carolina.
  • After forcing its opponent to go three-and-out on the first drive in each of its first four games, the Notre Dame defense has yielded a TD on the opponent's opening drive two weeks in a row.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES

  • C.J. Prosise now has nine rushing TDs this year. That is the most by an Irish ball carrier since 2011 when Jonas Gray had 12 and Cierre Wood had nine.
  • Prosise also ran for three TDs against Georgia Tech on Sept. 19. He joins Frank Lonergan (1902) and Reggie Brooks (1992) as the only running backs to have two three-rushing TD games for the Irish in the same season. Lonergan had four rushing TDs against both DePauw (Oct. 17) and Chicago Physicians and Surgeons (Oct. 29). Brooks had three scoring runs against both Purdue (Sept. 26) and USC (Nov. 28).
  • Prosise now has eclipsed 100 yards rushing in four of the past five games (vs. Virginia, Georgia Tech, UMass and Navy). He has had a 100-yard game of some sort in each of the past five games, including his 100-yard receiving game last week at Clemson.
  • Prosise's three rushing TDs versus Navy tied an ND record against the Midshipmen held by Travis Thomas (2007), Jonas Gray (2011) and Everett Golson (2014).
  • Justin Yoon's 52-yard field goal just before halftime matched the third longest in school history. Dave Reeve (1976 vs. Pittsburgh) and Kyle Brindza (2013 vs. Arizona State in Arlington, Texas) both had 53-yard field goals for the Irish.
  • Will Fuller's second-quarter TD catch was the 23rd of his career, moving him into sole possession of fourth place in school history, passing both Rhema McKnight (2002-06) and Derrick Mayes (1992-95) who each had 22 TD receptions.
  • Fuller's 30-yard TD catch in the second quarter was his fifth TD grab this year of at least 30 yards.
  • Torii Hunter Jr.'s 28-yard catch just before halftime was his career long.
  • DeShone Kizer became the first Notre Dame quarterback to rush for a TD in three straight games since Everett Golson in 2012 vs. Oklahoma, Pittsburgh and Boston College (Oct. 27-Nov. 10).
  • Kizer has now rushed and passed for a TD in each of Notre Dame's last three games.
  • DB Elijah Shumate's interception of Navy QB Tago Smith with 6:14 left in the fourth quarter was the first non-Cole Luke interception for the Irish this season.
  • Sophomore LG Alex Bars made his first career start today.
