North Carolina Postgame Notes

  • Carolina fell to 2-4 on the season with the 50-43 loss Saturday. The Tar Heels are now 2-17 all-time against Notre Dame and 0-12 in South Bend.

  • The 93 combined points are the most in the history of the series. The previous high was 71 in the 45-26 Notre Dame win in 2006. Carolina's 43 points are also a high for the series.

  • The 93 points are the most combined points ever in a game in Notre Dame Stadium history (built in 1930). The previous high for Notre Dame Stadium was 92 on October 8, 2011, a 59-33 Irish win over Air Force.

  • The teams combined for 1,019 yards - 519 for Notre Dame and 510 for the Tar Heels.

  • Carolina ran 84 plays and the Irish ran 81. This is the second time this season that both teams ran at least 80 plays in a game (East Carolina 97, UNC 82). UNC's have opponents have averaged 86.3 plays from scrimmage in the last four games.

  • This is the third time in the last four games that an opponent has scored 50 or more points. In each of those three games, Carolina also scored at least 35 points.

  • Carolina's 43 points are the third most in a UNC loss in school history, surpassed only by a 68-50 loss to Georgia Tech in 2012 and a 49-47 loss to Syracuse (in overtime) in 2003. This is the most points in a road loss in UNC history.

  • Carolina amassed a season-high 30 first downs (previous was 29 vs. Liberty) and gained a season-best 510 yards of total offense (previous was 478 at Clemson).

  • QB Marquise Williams completed 24 of 41 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 18 times for a career-high 132 yards and a touchdown and caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Quinshad Davis. This marks the second time in his career Williams has had passing, rushing and receiving touchdowns in the same game. He also did it in 2013 against Virginia, becoming the first UNC quarterback to catch a touchdown pass since Kevin Anthony in 1984.

  • Williams became the first Tar Heel in school history to pass for 300 yards and rush for 100 in the same game. It is only the sixth time a UNC player had 100 rushing yards and at least 200 passing yards. Williams was also one of the previous five players to accomplish that when he had 104 rushing and 223 passing last year vs. Duke.

  • Williams had his second career 100-yard rushing game. His previous rushing high was 104 last year against Duke.

  • Williams posted his second 300-yard passing game this year (345 at Clemson) and the third of his career.

  • Williams moved past 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards with his performance today against Notre Dame. Williams is now 12th in school history with 3,279 passing yards and has 1,097 rushing yards. He is one of only two players in Carolina history to throw for over 3,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards in a career. Ronald Curry threw for 4,987 yards and rushed for 1,249 from 1998-2001.

  • Williams' rushing touchdown was his third score on the ground in 2014 and the 12th of his career. Williams ranks second in school history in career rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 12. Curry is the all-time leader with 13.

  • Williams came into today's game with a career long rush of 28 yards. In the third quarter, he first tied that mark with a 28-yard run, then set a personal best two possessions later when he ran for 41 yards.

  • Today's game marked the sixth time in his career Williams has thrown for at least one score and rushed for at least one score in the same game.

  • WR Quinshad Davis scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Williams in the second quarter. It was the 19th touchdown reception of his career, which ties him for second most in school history with Octavus Barnes (1994-97). He is just two shy of Hakeem Nicks' 21 scoring receptions from 2006-08.

  • Davis now has 127 career receptions, just two shy of moving into the top 10 in school history.

  • Davis threw his third career touchdown pass to Williams late in the third quarter, a 23-yard scoring play to give Carolina the lead. Davis also threw touchdowns against Virginia (to Williams) and East Carolina (to T.J. Thorpe) in 2013. He is a perfect 3 for 3 in his career.

  • TB Elijah Hood scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the season on Carolina's first drive of the game. He is tied with Davis for the team lead in touchdowns.

  • LB Jeff Schoettmer had his second interception return for a touchdown this season in the first quarter, 29-yard scoring play. Both of Schoettmer's career interceptions have come this season and both were returned for touchdowns (also vs. Liberty).

  • WR Mack Hollins caught an 18-yard touchdown pass with 47 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. It was his fourth receiving score this season, which ties for the team lead with Davis. Hollins led the Tar Heels with six catches for 84 yards today.
