    A total of 15 high school seniors have signed national letters of intent with plans to enroll at the University of Notre Dame in August 2005 and play for the Irish football squad.

    The 15 players come from 12 states - Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.

    As listed by position, the Irish add to their roster three defensive backs, three linebackers, two offensive linemen, two defensive linemen, two wide receivers, one tight end, one fullback and one quarterback - though several of the players played multiple positions in high school and could move to other positions once they arrive on campus.

    Among the 15 players are:

    • One player rated among the top 150 nationally by collegefootballnews.com - wide receiver D.J. Hord (104th).

    • Two players named Gatorade player of the year in his home state - wide receiver D.J. Hord (Missouri) and fullback Asaph Schwapp (Connecticut).

    • One player who played in the U.S. Army All-America game in San Antonio last month - wide receiver D.J. Hord.

    • Eight players who attended the Notre Dame football camp in the summer of 2004 - defensive back David Bruton, offensive lineman Paul Duncan, wide receiver David Grimes, tight end Joey Hiben, fullback Asaph Schwapp, quarterback Evan Sharpley, linebacker Scott Smith and linebacker Kevin Washington.

    Bruton, David (DB, 6-2, 184, Miamisburg, OH -- Miamisburg) -- Made 54 tackles, three interceptions and broke up seven passes as senior in 2004 at Miamisburg High School in Miamisburg, Ohio . . . caught 10 passes as receiver for 200 yards . . . averaged 41 yards on his four kickoff returns . . . won all-Division I-II all-area honors from Dayton Daily News . . . won all-district honors on defense . . . all-conference and special mention all-Southwest Ohio as junior . . . intercepted eight passes as junior in `03 . . . also made 58 tackles in `03 and had 270 receiving yards on offense . . . attended Notre Dame football camp in summer of '04 . . . coached by Tim Lewis.

    Duncan, Paul (OL, 6-7, 270, Dallas, GA -- East Paulding) - The 2004 Offensive Lineman of the Year for the state of Georgia by the Atlanta Touchdown Club . . . named to Super Southern 100 team by Atlanta Journal-Constitution . . . played both offensive and defensive tackle as senior at East Paulding High School in Dallas, Ga. . . . first-team pick as offensive lineman on Georgia Class AAAA all-state team by Atlanta Journal-Constitution . . . rated the nation's no. 18 offensive tackle by Tom Lemming's Prep Football Report . . . played in Georgia North-South all-state game following senior season . . . attended Notre Dame football camp in summer of '04 . . . coached by Tim Glanton.

    Grimes, David (WR, 5-10, 170, Detroit, MI -- DePorres) -- Caught 48 passes for 800 yards and eight touchdowns as senior in 2004 for state runner-up St. Martin DePorres High School in Detroit, Mich. . . . made 41 tackles on defense and intercepted five passes . . . first-team all-state pick on Detroit Free-Press Dream Team as wide receiver . . . returned a fumble 36 yards for a TD in '04 Michigan Division 7 state title game against Unionville-Sebewaing . . . also caught five passes for 59 yards and made seven tackles in that game . . . helped team to overall 9-5 mark in `04 and first-place tie in Detroit Catholic League . . . captain of team as senior . . . honorable mention all-conference as junior when he helped DePorres to Michigan Division 8 state crown while scoring on 80-yard TD reception in state title game, a 20-9 win over Beal City . . . a top-flight guard in basketball . . . brother Carl was freshman wide receiver at Michigan State in 2004 . . . attended Notre Dame football camp in summer of '04 . . . coached by Greg Carter.

    Hand, Derrell (DL, 6-3, 300, Philadelphia, PA -- West Catholic) -- Had 72 tackles and seven sacks as senior in 2004 at West Catholic High School in Philadelphia, Pa. . . . made 10 receptions good for 312 yards as tight end . . . first-team selection for Philadelphia Catholic League as both defensive tackle and tight end . . . averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds in basketball . . . helped West Catholic's rushing defense permit less than two yards per opponent rush attempt in 2004 . . . coached by Brian Fluck.

    Herring, Ray (DB, 6-1, 215, Melbourne, FL -- Holy Trinity) -- Made 76 tackles and nine interceptions as strong safety at Holy Trinity Academy in 2004 in Melbourne, Fla. . . . carried 40 times for 362 yards and caught 21 passes for 447 yards on offense, accounting for 13 TDs . . . rushed 34 times for 316 yards and four TDs as junior . . . also caught 31 passes good for 831 yards and 12 TDs, while making 149 tackles, four sacks, seven interceptions and four fumble recoveries on defense . . . four-time all-state pick who finished seventh in Florida prep history with his 25 career interceptions . . . sprinter in track who also played basketball . . . coached by John Thomas.

    Hiben, Joey (TE, 6-5, 225, Chaska, MN -- Waconia) -- Played as tight end, tailback, defensive end and punter as senior . . . rushed 22 times for 235 yards . . . recorded 44 tackles and three sacks along with a 42-yard punting average . . . had four touchdown receptions as senior in '04 . . . averaged 20 yards per catch on combined 20 catches as junior and senior in 2003 and '04 at Waconia High School in Waconia, Minn. . . . second-team Minnesota all-state pick as senior . . . all-county pick as junior . . . rated the nation's no. 10 tight end by Tom Lemming's Prep Football Report . . . has run a 14.5 in 110 high hurdles . . . finished fourth in Minnesota state track meet in hurdles as sophomore . . . also has long-jumped 20 feet, triple-jumped more than 40 feet and thrown the shot put more than 53 feet . . . attended Notre Dame football camp in summer of '04 . . . coached by Pat Foley.

    Hord, D.J. (WR, 6-2, 185, Lee's Summit, MO (Kansas City Rockhurst) -- Caught 36 passes for 560 yards and six TDs as senior in 2004 at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Mo. . . . named Gatorade Player of the Year in Missouri for '04 . . . helped Rockhurst to semifinals of Missouri state high school playoffs in '04 . . . grabbed 56 passes for 955 yards and 10 TDs as junior in '03 . . . rated the nation's no. 17 wide receiver by Tom Lemming's Prep Football Report . . . has run a 10.39 100, 21.39 200 meters and long-jumped 21 feet . . . chosen for U.S. Army All-American Bowl . . . coached by Tony Severino.

    Kuntz, Pat (DL, 6-4, 230, Indianapolis, IN -- Roncalli) -- Led Roncalli High School in Indianapolis, Ind., to second straight Indiana state title by making 114 tackles, 27 tackles for losses, 14 sacks and one interception while forcing a pair of fumbles in 2004 . . . made 120 tackles and 10 sacks as junior . . . rated the nation's no. 24 defensive tackle by Tom Lemming's Prep Football Report . . . coached by Bruce Scifres.

    McCarthy, Kyle (DB, 6-0, 190, Youngstown, OH -- Cardinal Mooney) -- Rushed for 1,100 yards and threw for another 700 in 2004 as senior quarterback and defensive back at Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, Ohio . . . named the 2004 Tri-County Player of the Year . . . returned two interceptions and three punts for touchdowns as senior . . . helped Cardinal Mooney to Ohio State prep title in '04 . . . has a brother who is currently a junior at Notre Dame . . . also plays baseball . . . coached by P.J.     Quinn, Steve (LB, 6-3, 204, Cherry Hill, NJ -- St. Joseph's Prep, Philadelphia, PA) - A three-year starter at both receiver and linebacker at St. Joseph's Prep (PA) . . . 2004 Philadelphia Catholic League Player of the Year . . . a finalist for the Maxwell Football Club's Player of the Year honor . . . named all-state at linebacker in '04 and was named all-City, all-Southeastern Pennsylvania and all-Area at receiver . . . as senior in 2004 he caught 32 passes for 599 yards and four touchdowns . . . returned 18 punts for 195 yards in '04 . . . on defense in '04 he made 74 tackles (44 solos) including 14 for losses, six sacks, made two interceptions, forced three fumbles, recovered two fumbles and broke up 20 passes . . . had 78 receptions for 1,649 yards (21.1 avg.) and 17 TDs in his career . . . career defensive totals: 211 tackles (123 solos) including 41 tackles for loss, 24 sacks, 40 pass breakups, seven fumble recoveries, five forced fumbles and four interceptions . . . coached by Gil Brooks.

    Schwapp, Asaph (FB, 6-2, 230, Hartford, CT -- Weaver) -- Earned first-team all-state honors from Hartford Courant . . . averaged five yards per carry while rushing for more than 1,110 yards and also played inside linebacker . . . named Gatorade Player of the Year in Connecticut for '04 . . . as junior rushed 110 times for 1,313 yards and 13 TDs . . . also caught 10 passes for 110 yards and one TD and made 74 tackles with eight sacks and five interceptions . . . has run 24-flat 200 meters and has thrown the shot 53 feet . . . attended Notre Dame football camp in summer of '04 . . . rated the nation's no. 21 fullback by Tom Lemming's Prep Football Report . . . coached by Rob Fleeting.

    Sharpley, Evan (QB, 6-2, 205, Marshall, MI -- Marshall) -- Completed 91 of 188 passes for 1,389 yards and 16 touchdowns as senior in 2004 at Marshall High School in Marshall, Mich. . . . also rushed for 323 yards and five TDs as senior . . . made four interceptions in '04 as free safety . . .     Turkovich, Michael (OL, 6-7, 275, Bedford, PA -- Valley Forge Military Academy) - Was a starter on both sides of the football, playing tackle on offense and defense at Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania . . . as a senior, made 13 sacks on defense and led an offensive line that produced 185 rushing yards per game and 23 rushing touchdowns . . . did not allow a sack at offensive tackle . . . helped Valley Forge to a 6-3 record in '04 . . . graded close to 90 percent at offensive tackle in '04 . . . was an excellent run stopper at defensive tackle . . . rated the no. 21 player in the East by Tom Lemming's Prep Football Report . . . also started on Valley Forge's basketball team and is a pitcher for the baseball team . . . coached by Jim Burner.

    Washington, Kevin (LB, 6-1, 215, Sugar Land, TX -- Austin) -- Combined for 81 tackles and four interceptions in junior and senior seasons combined at Austin High School in Sugar Land, Texas . . . rushed 102 times for 521 yards and four touchdowns as senior quarterback - and also completed 36 of 88 passes for 746 yards and two TDs . . . as a junior he played safety and quarterback . . . member of the Dallas Morning News Texas Top 100 . . . attended Notre Dame football camp in summer of '04 . . . coached by Tom Stuart.
