Mustipher, Newsome, Tranquill Named 2018 Notre Dame Football Captains

March 7, 2018

NOTRE DAME, Indiana - Graduate center Sam Mustipher, graduate punter Tyler Newsome and graduate linebacker Drue Tranquill have been named captains for the 2018 University of Notre Dame football team.

Tranquill is the 23rd different two-time captain in Irish history after serving in the role in 2017, while Newsome represents the first Fighting Irish captain who is purely a kicking specialist. Blair Kiel was the starting punter for the Irish and selected as a captain in 1983, but he also happened to be the starting quarterback.

Mustipher has started at center for all 25 games at Notre Dame over the last two seasons. He did not allow a sack or QB hit in 2017 (on 889 total snaps). Mustipher helped Notre Dame set the following modern school records: single-game rush yards per carry vs. Boston College on Sept. 16, 2017 (10.1 yards per rush), single-season rush yards (3,503) and single-season rush yards per carry (6.3 yards per rush) — which topped the previous school record of 6.2 (set in 1921).

Tranquill, a 2016 Academic All-American, has played in 39 career games and started 29, including all 13 games in his first season at linebacker in 2017. He totaled 85 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, four passes defended, one interception and one forced fumble. A mechanical engineering major, Tranquill has a 3.734 grade-point average and has been named to the University’s Dean's List five of his seven semesters at Notre Dame.

Newsome is a three-year Monogram winner and three-year starting punter. He ranks second in school history with a career average of 43.8 yards per punt. Newsome also holds the Notre Dame single-game record for punting average (minimum five punts) — 52.4 yards per punt vs. UMass in 2015 (seven punts for 263 yards).

More than 200 student-athletes, including this year's contingent, have served as permanent Irish football captains during the program's storied 129-year history.
