Construction Begins On Don F. and Flora Guglielmino Family Athletics Center

May 5, 2004

Rev. Edward A. Malloy, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame, blessed the site of the forthcoming Don F. and Flora Guglielmino Family Athletics Center in a public ceremony on April 24 at the building's future location on Courtney Lane on the east side of the Notre Dame campus.

The Gug will adjoin the west side of the Loftus Center.

A portion of the Loftus Center restrooms and exterior wall were removed in order to prepare for the joining of the two buidings.

A 95,840-square-foot facility, it will house the football locker rooms, offices and meeting rooms, as well as provide Notre Dame's 800 student-athletes with enhanced space for training and sports medicine, strength and conditioning programs, and equipment.

The wooden tunnel just beyond the fence serves as the temporary entrance to the Loftus Center.

A utility tunnel will run underneath the ground and carry the water pipes.

The utility tunnel starts just off of Courtney Lane.

The designer/builder on the project is McShane Construction of Chicago, and construction will be completed in late summer of 2005.
