Nine of the 2016 Notre Dame opponents played in postseason bowl games following the 2015 season -- including Nevada (7-6, won Arizona Bowl over Colorado State), Michigan State (12-2, lost Cotton Bowl to Alabama in College Football Playoff semifinal), Duke (8-5, won Pinstripe Bowl over Indiana), North Carolina State (7-6, lost Belk Bowl to Mississippi State), Stanford (12-2, won Rose Bowl over Iowa), Miami (8-5, lost Sun Bowl to Washington State), Navy (11-2, won Military Bowl over Pittsburgh), Virginia Tech (7-6, won Independence Bowl over Tulsa) and USC (8-6, lost Holiday Bowl to Wisconsin). The 2017 schedule will feature seven home games for the first time since 2010, as the Irish take a one-year break from their Shamrock Series games.

"In 2017, the first year in which we will compete in the renovated stadium, we thought it was important to maximize the opportunity for our fans to attend a home game," said Jack Swarbrick, Notre Dame's vice president and James E. Rohr Director of Athletics. "We look forward to restoring the Shamrock Series tradition in 2018 and the years beyond."

All of the stadium renovations associated with Campus Crossroads, the $400 million project that will use the University of Notre Dame's iconic football stadium as a hub for new facilities supporting academic and student life initiatives, will be completed by the start of the 2017 season. Laboratories, classrooms and offices for the anthropology and psychology departments will occupy four levels of the nine-story building on the east side of the stadium, with one level devoted to a digital media center. Space designed to enhance student development and formation will fill the first five levels of the nine-story building linked to the west side of the stadium. Both buildings will be topped by stadium seating and media accommodations. A structure connected to the south side of the stadium will house the Department of Music and the Sacred Music at Notre Dame program.
