Notre Dame football: Schwapp's death shakes ND family

Asaph Daniel Schwapp, 26, was born in Hartford on January 26, 1987 and ended his courageous battle with lymphoma on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 surrounded by his family and close friends. This beloved son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin, friend, and star athlete leaves a tremendous legacy of kindness, humor, love, and strength. He was a mentor, role model, and leader who excelled in academics as well as sports. In 2004, Schwapp was named Connecticut Gatorade football player of the year while attending Weaver High School in Hartford. He graduated from Weaver in 2005 as a member of the National Honors Society.

Schwapp received an athletic scholarship to the University of Notre Dame where he played at fullback for four years and received a bachelor's degree in finance. The motto of his alma mater is the Latin phrase "Vita, Dulcedo, Spes" meaning 'Life, Sweetness, Hope.' Schwapp embodied this idea throughout his illness and lived each day to the fullest. He will be remembered as a gentle giant who believed in helping others, especially the youth of Hartford.

Schwapp was employed by Merrill Lynch in Hartford as a Financial Advisor. His memory is forever cherished by his father, Alvin D. Schwapp, Sr. of Hartford; two brothers, Alvin D. Schwapp, Jr. and his wife Elby and their children Jazmine, Alexis, and Maya of Weatogue and Andrew D. Schwapp of Avon; two sisters, Deborah A. Smith and her husband Vanthony and their children Justin and Evan of McDonough, GA and Deleene A. Walker and her daughter Omaree of Oxnard, CA; most beloved girlfriend, Amanda Finestone and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins in the Byrd, Schwapp, and King families. As young children Schwapp and brother Andrew were predeceased by their mother, Evelyn Byrd Schwapp, and raised by their special aunt and uncle, Loretta and Clarke King of Hartford.

A homegoing service will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue in Windsor with calling hours from 9-11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Bloomfield. Asaph's family wishes to extend sincerest appreciation to the many individuals and organizations in the Hartford community, local and national media outlets, as well as the members of the University of Notre Dame Family for their tremendous outpouring of kindness and support during such a difficult time.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Asaph D.
