Second Day Dawns For Irish At Culver

Aug. 4, 2018

CULVER, Indiana -- The No. 11 Notre Dame football team hit Oliver Field at Culver Academies for practice number two on Saturday, Aug. 4. Fighting Irish Media had exclusive access as fall camp raged on.

Practice #2

After breakfast and morning meetings, the team ventured out for practice at roughly 10:20 a.m. As the NCAA-mandated acclimatization period continues, players remained in helmets, jerseys and shorts. The Irish will transition to shoulder pads Sunday and full pads come on Tuesday.

Mother nature certainly dialed up the thermostat, with both the temperature and humidity up from Friday's opening day of practice. Temperatures peaked around 90 degrees with a heat index approaching 95 degrees. Players got a break for treatment with the athletic training staffs before a special team meeting began at 3:45 p.m. The offense and defense then went through a meeting and lift rotation. The defense had position meetings at 4:30, while the offense lifted, and they flipped at 5:45 p.m. (offensive had position meetings and defense lifted).

After dinner, the offense and defense are scheduled for separate 45-minute walk-thrus. Each walk-thru was moved indoors due to the heat.

Fighting Irish Media has the highlights of day two and one-on-one interviews with both Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly and junior All-American cornerback Julian Love.

Culver Cuts

  • Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly has started a new tradition during fall camp. He'll pick an offensive, defensive and special teams player of the day. The player selected will have best represented the traits necessary to compete for championships.
  • Junior wide receiver Chase Claypool, junior defensive lineman Daelin Hayes and junior safety Jalen Elliott received the recognition following Friday's first practice.
  • The Amway Coaches Poll was released on Friday, with the Irish receiving 892 votes to rank 11th. Five 2018 Notre Dame opponents clocked in among the top 25 -- No. 13 Stanford, No. 14 Michigan, No. 15 Southern Cal, No. 17 Virginia Tech and No. 19 Florida State. In addition, Northwestern received votes.
  • Practice number three is set for Sunday, Aug. 5. It will mark Notre Dame's first practice in shoulder pads. Stay tuned to UND.com, as Fighting Irish Media will have exclusive coverage of the session.
