NEW HAVEN, Conn. - University of Notre Dame Heisman Trophy candidate Josh Adams has been named the Walter Camp National FBS Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 35-14 rout of No. 14 NC State.
Adams rushed for 202 yards on a career-high 27 carries, including a 77-yard TD run as the Irish rumbled for 318 yards on the ground against the against the nation's sixth-ranked rushing defense. Notre Dame bested NC State's average coming into the game (91.3) by nearly 230 yards.
Adams is the first Irish player to ever rush for at least 150 yards in five different games in a single season. He's registered six 100-yard rushing games and five have been achieved in the first half.
Adams surpassed 1,000 yards rushing for the season on his 110th carry of the year. He's the fastest Notre Dame running back in program history in terms of carries to surpass the 1,000-yard mark.
Adams recorded his nation's best seventh run of at least 60 yards and fourth run of at least 70 yards.
Adams is the sixth Notre Dame player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the second offensive honoree (Brady Quinn, QB, Sept. 24, 2006).
Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side.
