NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Notre Dame inside linebacker Anthony Denman has been named a third-team All-American by Football News.

Denman, a 6-2, 235-pound senior from Rusk, Texas, currently ranks as the leading Irish tackler in 2000 with 78 overall, 49 of them solo efforts. He also paces the team in sacks (five) and in tackles for loss (13 for 50).

Named to the Butkus Award watch list to start the season, he matched his career high with 13 tackles versus top-rated Nebraska (including a sack and two tackles for losses) in an effort Notre Dame coach Bob Davie called "the best game I've seen played by a linebacker since I've been at Notre Dame."

Denman has led the Irish in tackles in five of the last six games, including 11 against Air Force and nine against Boston College. Against Air Force, he made five tackles for lost yardage and forced two fumbles.

A two-year starter for the Irish, Denman is one of four senior captains for Notre Dame in 2000.

He's a management major in the Mendoza College of Business.
