Weeks, Schaner Named to Golf All-America Scholar Team

University of Notre Dame golfers Bryan Weeks (Tulsa, Okla.) and Kristin Schaner (West Middlesex, Pa.) have been named to the 1997 All-America Scholar team by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The awards are presented by the Friends of Golf and sponsored by the Ben Hogan Company.

Notre Dame was one of 14 schools in the nation, and one of five from the Midwest, to place both a men's and women's golfer on the All-America Scholar team.

Division I men's criteria for selection include a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on 4.0 scale), academic standing as a junior or senior, a season stroke average of 78 or lower and participation in at least 75 percent of a school's scheduled competitive rounds. Criteria for the women's honorees include a GPA of at least 3.40, academic standing of at least a sophomore and play in at least 66 percent of a team's competitive rounds.

Weeks--who will serve as the Notre Dame team captain as a senior during the upcoming season--is one of 61 players from among 270 Division I teams to be named to the GCAA All-America Scholar team. He is one of 11 players from among the 43 teams in District Four to be named to the team.

Schaner, also a senior-to-be, is one of 82 players from among 163 Division I women's golf teams to be named an All-American Scholar. She is part of 27 women's golfers named to the team from the 33 schools in the Midwest District.

Weeks carries a 3.27 cumulative GPA as a civil engineering major and posted a 3.40 semester GPA in the spring of '97. He led the Irish during four of nine tournament during 1996-97, including a runner-up showing at the 98-player Butler Spring Invitational, fifth-place at the season-ending Cleveland State Invitational (67 players) and share of ninth at the 96-player Johnny Owens Invitational (held in Lexington, Ky.). Weeks averaged 75.00 strokes per round during five spring tournaments and 76.00 strokes for the entire 1996-97 season, the second-lowest stroke average at Notre Dame in the last 16 years (Joe Dennen posted a 75.90 in 1992-93). His career stroke average of 76.68 (over 66 rounds) remains best at Notre Dame during the 1990s (full career averages are currently unavailable from the 1980s). Weeks has led the Irish in 11 tournaments during his career and this past season carded career-best rounds of 70 at both the Johnny Owens and Cleveland State.

Schaner, a sociology major, owns a 3.49 cumulative GPA after posting a 3.33 in the spring of '97. She posted a 1996-97 season stroke average of 84.05, including an 82.75 in four fall tournaments. Schaner was hampered by injury in the spring, ultimately missing the final two tournaments of the year.

The 13-player Notre Dame women's golf program posted a 3.14 team GPA in the spring of 1997 and owns a 3.10 cumulative GPA. The 17-player Irish men's golf program carries a 3.08 cumulative team GPA, including a 3.13 in the spring of '97.
