COACH KUBINSKI SAYS: "Eric is a very talented player and has made a number of contributions to our program. His summer play has been outstanding the last two years, as evidenced by his U.S. Amateur appearance and his top finishes in prestigious events back home in Minnesota. While his seasonal play has been inconsistent at times, he can play a big role as the spring season progresses. He drives the ball very well and has the ability to make many birdies when his putter gets hot." AS A SENIOR (Fall of 2005): Competed in four fall tournaments, registering a 76.33 stroke average ...had seven of 12 rounds count to team score ... teed off at Gopher Invitational with 42nd-place tie at 17-over par 233 (81-78-74) ... shot six-over par 222 (74-73-75) to tie for 32nd at Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, his best finish of the fall ... took share of 79th place at Coca-Cola Duke Classic with 16-over par 232 (75-77-80) ... tied for 59th place in The Prestige at PGA WEST after shooting a 13-over par 229 (75-80-74). SUMMER 2005: Qualified for U.S. Amateur by placing second in sectional qualifier (149, +7) at Somerby Golf Club in Byron, Minn. ... shot a 17-over par 157 (76-81) and missed cut at U.S. Amateur, which was contested at the legendary Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. ... advanced to second round of match play in Minnesota Players Championship at Dellwood Hills Golf Club in Dellwood, Minn.; representing Rochester Golf & Country Club, he defeated Victor Alstrom 5 & 4 in opening round before losing to David Blue 3 & 2 in second round ... finished 52nd in the Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament for Champions at the Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa., with four-day score of 15-over par 295 (72-75-77-71) ... placed fourth in Minnesota PGA Golf Champions Invitational at the Minneapolis Golf Club; shot an even-par 216 (69-74-73) to finish as second-best amateur in professional field -- held share of first-round lead and was one of four golfers to finish at par or better, ending up seven strokes off the pace ... tied for 45th in Eastern Amateur Championship at Elizabeth Manor Country Club in Portsmouth, Va.; shot a five-over par 285 (69-70-75-71) ... took fourth place in Minnesota State Amateur at The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis; finished at three-over par 219 (76-72-71) to end up four shots off the pace. AS A JUNIOR: Participated in 11 events, including 10 as a member of the starting lineup for the Irish ... picked up second monogram ... recorded a 76.20 stroke average and had 22 rounds count to the team score ... opened with a tie for 17th place at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational, helping Notre Dame to its best-ever showing at the event (tie for fifth) ... shot a 10-over par 223 (69-75-79) to tie Scott Gustafson for team-high scoring honors ... his first-round 69 also was one stroke shy of his career-low score for 18 holes ... came back with a 12th-place tie at the Notre Dame Invitational/Central Regional Preview with a 10-over par 220 (73-72-75), the second-best score on the team ... faltered slightly at the Windon Memorial Classic, tying for 77th place with a score of 21-over par 234 (80-77-77) ... bounced back nicely with a 21st-place finish at The Nelson Invitational, shooting a career-best six-over par 213 (69-72-72), sharing team-high scoring honors with Cole Isban ... closed out the fall campaign by tying with rookie teammate Greg Rodgers for 49th place at The Prestige at PGA WEST ... carded a 23-over par 239 (84-82-73) on the difficult Greg Norman Course at legendary PGA WEST in La Quinta, Calif. ... started in each of first two spring tournaments for Irish ... tied for 52nd place at NOKIA Sugar Bowl Tulane Invitational with 19-over par 235 (83-76-76); rolled in par putt on first hole of sudden death playoff to help Irish win team championship ... shot a 28-over par 244 (83-80-81) and ended up tied for 56th place at Irish Spring Invitational ... returned to action as individual for dual match vs. #11 TCU, carding a five-over par 145 (72-73) ... came back to starting quintet for Aggie Invitational and fired a 25-over 241 (81-82-78) to place 69th ... continued penchant for clutch play in postseason, tying for third at the BIG EAST Championship with a seven-over 77 in the weather-affected lone round ... turned in one of finest postseason efforts in school history with team-best tie for 20th place at NCAA Central Regional, shooting a five-over par 215 (73-74-68), including a postseason school-record (and career-low-tying) 68 in the final round as the Irish charged to within two strokes of advancing to NCAA finals. SUMMER 2004: Won Minnesota State Amateur Championship in wire-to-wire performance with 54-hole total of six-under par 207 (67-70-70) ... won Twin Cities Amateur Championship in another wire-to-wire showing, firing 36-hole score of 142 (71-71) ... in both victories, Deutsch edged out teammate and fellow Minnesotan Scott Gustafson. AS A SOPHOMORE: Garnered first monogram after placing fourth on the team with a 76.90 stroke average in 10 events ... had a 77.17 stroke average in the spring season ... one of four Irish golfers to own two top-10 finishes in '03-04 ... third among Irish regulars with 85.7 percent of his rounds (18 of 21) counting to team score ... was at his best during the opening round, carding a 75.80 stroke average (third on team) ... played in four tournaments during the fall ... posted a 76.45 stroke average ... struggled in his first two competitions, taking 80th place at the Windon Memorial Classic (236, +20) and 71st place at the SMU/Stonebridge Invitational (237, +21) ... rounded back into form at The Tillinghast with a seventh-place finish ... fired a nine-over par 149 (75-74) while competing as an individual ... concluded the fall season by tying teammate Tommy Balderston for 54th place at The Nelson Invitational ... registered a six-over par 219 (69-70-80) as an individual with his first two rounds being his best of the fall ... saved his best outing of the spring for Notre Dame's largest stage to date, posting his best career finish (tie-fifth) at the BIG EAST Championship with a nine-over par 219 ... earned all-BIG EAST honors was key figure in first Irish league title since 1997 ... continued solid play at NCAA Central Regional with tie for 27th place in 141-golfer field at 10-over par 226 (76-71-79) ... finished four strokes shy of qualifying for NCAA Championship as an individual ... his 36-hole score of 147 (+3) was the best two-round NCAA mark in school history ... the second-round 71 was the second-best single-round postseason score in Irish lore, one shy of the school record. AS A FRESHMAN: Proved himself in qualifying and stepped right into Notre Dame's regular lineup, playing in 10 tournaments, including all five fall events ... wound up fifth on team with a 76.00 stroke average as a rookie ... part of 2002-03 freshman class that was rated first in the nation by Golfstat's Freshman Class Impact Rankings after the fall of 2002 ... was third on the team with a 75.13 fall average ... opened the season by leading the Irish at the prestigious Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational and finished 22nd overall with a 12-over par 225 (73-73-79) ... tied for 55th at the Kansas Invitational with a 13-over par 229 (76-78-75) ... was third among Notre Dame golfers and tied for 38th at the Fresno Lexus Golf Classic ... turned in an eight-over par 224 (74-74-76) ...tied for 12th with a 54-hole total of even-par 216 (68-77-71) at the SMU/Stonebridge Invitational ... opening round 68 ties for ninth-best single round at Notre Dame and was second-lowest score of the fall to Mark Baldwin's 67 at The Nelson Invitational ... struggled at the fall finale at the Nelson Invitational, tying for 87th in the 96-player field ... shot a 20-over par 233 (75-75-83) ... returned to top of Irish ladder with a tie for 18th place (out of 107) at the Big Red Classic ... fired a one-over par 145 (76-69) to match his classmate, Scott Gustafson, for team-high honors ... stumbled a bit at Conrad Rehling Invitational, coming home in 67th place with a 27-over par 240 (84-81-75) ... finished in the same position two weeks later at the Johnny Owens Invitational with a score of 27-over par 243 (82-78-83) ... bounced back to lead Irish with a 28th-place finish in 100-player field at the Texas A&M Border Olympics ... carded a three-over par 219 (69-76-74), once again matching his best 18-hole score of the spring with an opening-round 69 ... tied for 11th place at the BIG EAST Championship with a 20-over par 230 (75-76-79), contributing to Notre Dame's second consecutive runner-up finish.
