WEEKS, HARDIN NAMED ALL-AMERICA SCHOLARS: Notre Dame senior Bryan Weeks (Tulsa, Okla.) and junior Brad Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) were among 126 Division I mens golfers selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) to its annual All-America Scholar team ... Notre Dame was one of eight schools with multiple players on the team ... as of July 8, the GCAA had yet to release its womens All-America Scholar team, with Notre Dame sophomore Beth Cooper a likely member of that team ... Weeks graduated with a 3.23 cumulative GPA as a civil engineering major and was one of three Notre Dame male student-athletes nominated for the prestigious GTE Academic All-America honors for spring at-large sports ... Weeks ranked second on the 1997-98 team with a 75.44 stroke average, which ranks eighth-best at Notre Dame (since '54) ... Hardin averaged 76.75 strokes in 1997-98 and owns a 3.75 cumulative GPA as a pre-professional science major ... Weeks and Hardin were among four golfers from BIG EAST Conference schools named to the team and were two of 16 honorees from the 43-school Midwest District.

HARDIN TIES FOR 5TH AT STATE AMATEUR: Notre Dame junior Brad Hardin surged to a share of fifth at the Indiana State Amateur, June 22-25 at South Bend's Morris Park Country Club ... Hardin's 283 total was five shots out of the lead and two shy of third ... he opened with matching rounds of 72 on the par-70, 6,550-yard course before firing a third-round 70 and a 69 over the final 18 ... his final round tied for second-lowest in the final round ... Hardin was one of four players to shoot 72 or lower in all four rounds ... his 139 total over the final 36 holes also ranked third among the 63-golfer field .. Hardin improved on his 14th-place showing at the '97 Indiana State Amateur, when he shot 290 (68-74-75-73) at Meridian Hills Country Club ... he finished as runner-up at the 1997 State Amateur Match-Play Championship, shooting a 71 in qualifying at Bear Slide Golf Club before ultimately losing in the final to veteran player Randy Nichols.

KING, WEEKS PURSUE PRO CAREERS: Recent Notre Dame graduate Katie King (Spokane, Wash.) was one of 16 amateurs among the 34 players who qualified for the U.S. Open sectional qualifier, June 14-15 in Portland, Ore. ... her summer schedule includes attending LPGA qualifying school in late August (Venice, Fla.) and September (Missions Hills, Calif.) ... graduate Bryan Weeks will compete in several of the nation's top amateur tournaments during the summer before weighing his options for a pro career.

WARREN GOLF COURSE NEARS ONE-YEAR COUNTDOWN: The new millennium also will usher in a new era for Notre Dame golf, as the University will unveil a championship-caliber golf course in the fall of '99 ... through the generous donation of Notre Dame alumnus and Tulsa, Okla., resident Bill Warren ('56), the University is in the midst of constructing the 18-hole golf course, a stone's throw away from the northeast corner of campus ... the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame is being constructed in a heavily-wooded area that runs north of Douglas Road and east of Juniper Road ... the course is being designed by Coore and Crenshaw, which recently fashioned noteworthy courses as the Plantation Course at the Kapalua Resort in Maui, Hawaii, and Sand Hills Golf Club in Mullen, Neb. ... at the time of its introduction in '94, Sand Hills was recognized as one of the nation's best new private courses ... primary projects during the summer of '98 have included seeding and sculpturing while the irrigation system is scheduled for completion Sept. 1 ... clubhouse construction is scheduled to begin in early August while the seeding and sodding of the course is expected to be completed by Oct. 1 ... approximately 300 trees have been added while 4,400 seedlings are to be planted in the northeast corner ... a course general manager is expected to be hired by Sept. 1.

MORE COURSE FACTS: Coore and Crenshaw, co-owned by professional golfing legend Ben Crenshaw, also has undertaken noteworthy renovation projects during the past 15 years, including the Southern Hills Country Club (in Tulsa, Okla.) and the Prairie Dunes Golf Club (located in Kansas) ... Burke Memorial Golf Course, located on the northwest side of the Notre Dame campus, served as an 18-hole golf course until 1993, when the back nine was lost due to the addition of four new dormitories and several athletic fields ... the 67-year-old university course remains a convenient nine-hole facility for the campus community ... construction of the new course began March 1, 1997, with the first dirt movement beginning two months later ... many of the day-to-day behind the scenes tasks are being coordinated by the University's department of facility engineers, under the ultimate supervision of associate vice president for business operations Jim Lyphout ... the project also is being coordinated by associate athletic director Bubba Cunningham, who oversees the department's facility and financial affairs ... Mike Smith, Notre Dame director of facilities, oversees the daily engineering work while John DeLee is director of utilities and Doug Marsh--an architect in the Notre Dame facilities office--is in charge of designing all course buildings ... the South Bend-based company Rieth Reilly has been contracted to handle the movement of an estimated 100,000 yards of dirt ... another local company, Ziolkowski Construction, is handling construction of the course's buildings and structures ... final shaping will be directed by course architects Mike McKay and Jimbo Wright ... the course will be characterized by wide fairways, big greens and a park-like setting ... the course philosophy entails making the facility a predominantly walkable course, with manageable distances from pins to the next tee ... several trees will be added, primarily to the open areas near the intersection of Juniper and Douglas ... the designers also have successfully realigned the existing Juday Creek that runs through the course location ... a new channel of the creek has been opened, with a complete created habitat that has been hailed by environmentalists ... the creek winds through the final three holes of the back and front nines, which are noted for their heavy woods and change of elevations, thus providing golfers with a challenging finish whether they begin at the first or 10th tee ... two lakes will add to the challenge, with a smaller lake stationed between the third and fourth holes while a larger lake provides a hazard from the 17th tee ... fescue grass is being planted in the fairways, with bent grass in the tee boxes and greens ... Kim Hocker, existing superintendent of the University golf course, will serve as superintendent of all 27 holes of the combined Notre Dame courses ... Sally Derengoski, current director of golf operations, also will serve in a consulting capacity ... the 6,000-foot clubhouse will include a full pro shop and food service to accommodate 80 people.

TEAM AWARDS TO WEEKS, HARDIN: Notre Dame's annual team awards were presented to senior Bryan Weeks and junior Brad Hardin ... Weeks received the National Monogram Club Team MVP award while Hardin was named the men's golf team's Rockne Student-Athlete of the Year.

MEN SURGE TO SIXTH AT OSU (4/18-19): Notre Dame rallied to 6th among 16 of the district's top teams at the 29th Ohio State Kepler Intercollegiate ... the finish is the 2nd-highest for the Irish in 24 appearances at the Kepler, trailing only a 4th-place showing out of 26 teams in 1978 ... Notre Dame was 6th after an opening-round 298 before slipping to 7th with an afternoon round of 303 ... the Irish bounced back at the par-72, 7,109-yard OSU Scarlet Golf Course, with a round of 294 for an 895 total ... junior Willie Kent (76-76-69) and sophomore Todd Vernon (75-73-73) tied for 14th among the 82-golfer field while surging sophomore Jeff Connell (72-77-75) was not far behind at 224 ... Kent joined two other golfers in firing the 2nd-best round of the tournament (three-under 69) ... senior Brad Stanis (75-79-77) counted towards the Irish score in the 1st and 3rd rounds while senior captain Bryan Weeks (78-77-81) concluded a frustrating tournament in which he counted only in the 2nd round (he had counted in 22 of the previous 24 rounds).

IRISH EYE NCAAS: The Irish entered the final week of their season ranked 8th in the District and finished 10th in the final computer rankings ... Notre Dame's strong spring included 9th out of 20 teams at the Golden Ocala (Fla.) Intercollegiate, the team title at the 15-team Butler Invitational and a runner-up showing at the 20-team Kentucky Intercollegiate ... six teams from the Midwest District advanced to the NCAA Central Regional with five of those teams among the 10 that advanced to the NCAA Championship: Northwestern (3rd), Minnesota (6th), Ohio State (7th), Miami (9th) and Kent (10th) ... Toledo finished 21st at the regional while Indiana's Randy Leen claimed the district's only individual entry in the regional ... Notre Dame's Willie Kent (25th) and Todd Vernon (34th) ranked among the district's top golfers in the final GolfStat rankings.

KENT SUPER IN SPRING: Junior Willie Kent finished with a final ranking of 25th among individuals in the Midwest District, after transferring in the spring from Saint Louis University ... Kent averaged 74 strokes per round in the fall for SLU before averaging a team-best 74.07 strokes through 11 rounds with the Irish (79-73-70, 74-73, 72-71-71, 76-81-72 and 76-76-69) ... his 218 at the Kentucky Intercollegiate--where he finished 4th--equals the 5th-best 54-hole score in Irish history, since tournament play began in 1963 ... Kent shot par or better in four spring rounds while firing a 147 to take runner-up honors at the gusty Butler Invitational ... Kent's second-round 69 (-3) at the OSU Intercollegiate equals the lowest score by an Irish golfer since Dave Knee and Tim Saurs carded 68s in 1977-78 (Irish golfers have totaled a 69 during 16 rounds since '78) ... Kent's first tournament with the Irish--the Golden Ocala Intercollegiate--included his former school, with his younger brother, Alex, turning in rounds of 84-71-74 for the Billikens.

TRIPLE TROUBLE: Senior Bryan Weeks and sophomore Todd Vernon posted two of the best season and career stroke averages in Irish history ... Vernon counted to the team score in 25 of 27 rounds in 1997-98 and averaged 74.59 strokes, sliding below Bill Cvengros (74.64, 1967-68) with the 5th-best season avg. in recorded team history and best since John Lundgren's 74.40 in '79-'80 ... Weeks counted in 23 rounds with a 75.44 avg. (8th in recorded team history) ... Weeks' career stroke avg. of 76.22 represents the 4th-best mark in recorded team history (since '54) and best since Joseph Grace's 74.56 in '60-'62 ... Weeks shot 75 or lower in seven of his last 11 rounds and in 40 of 93 career rounds (he has counted to the team score in 80 career rounds) ... although Vernon still has two years left in his career, he has logged 44 rounds while averaging 75.39 strokes, which would trail only Charles Thurn (74.43, '56-'58) in the Irish record book ... Vernonwho has counted in 40 of 44 career roundsshot par or lower seven times in 1997-98 while Weeks also did so seven times in '97-'98, including four of his final 11 rounds ... sophomore Jeff Connell's strong spring (74.14) dropped his 1997-98 avg. to 75.44, which stands 9th in the Irish record book ... Connell also surged into the Irish career stroke leaders, ranking 5th at 76.27 over 33 rounds.

BREAKING THE 300 BARRIER: Notre Dame's team stroke average of 298.33 factored out to 74.58 per round counted to the team score and stands as the best mark by an Irish squad, since the count-four format was adopted in 1980 (the 1979-80 team held the previous record of 300.07) ... Notre Dame shot below 300 in 10 of 14 spring rounds, including six of the final eight.

FEARSOME FIVESOME: Notre Dame stormed to a 295.50 spring behind one of the best fivesomes in the program's history: senior Bryan Weeks, juniors Brad Hardin and Willie Kent and sophomores Jeff Connell and Todd Vernon ... one stroke separated the top-threeKent (1,037/74.07), Connell (1,038/74.14) and Vernon (1,038/74.14)while Weeks (75.43) and Hardin (75.82) posted solid springs as well ... the Irish golfers combined for 28 rounds of par or better in '97-'98: Connell (8), Vernon (7, in 6 different tournaments), Weeks (5), Kent (4) and Hardin (2) ... Vernon led the team at four of 11 tourneys while Weeks twice was top finisher ... Hardin led the Irish at the Louisville Intercollegiate and Connellwho has counted to the team score in 29 of 33 career roundsled the team at the Legends of Indiana and the Marshall Invitational, in addition to winning the Campus Championship ... Kent led the team with a share of 4th at the Johnny Owens Intercollegiate and tied with Vernon for 15th at OSU ... Hardin's top finish was 10th at the Butler Invite ... Hardin owns a recent top-two finish, as runner-up at the '96-'97 BIG EAST Championship ... Kent (-3), Weeks (-3) and Connell (-2) all posted 69s in '97-'98 while Vernon (-3) did so as a freshman.

ON PAR FOR GREATNESS: Notre Dame golfers hit par or better 17 times in the spring, including three even 71s at the Butler Invitational--Jeff Connell (1st round), Bryan Weeks (2nd) and Todd Vernon (2nd)--and Connell's record-setting showing at the Marshall Invitational (70-69-70) ... in the OSU Intercollegiate, Connell carded an even 72 in the 1st round and Willie Kent equaled the tournament's 2nd-best round with a final-round 69 ... Vernon also shot a one-under 71 at the Golden Ocala Intercollegiate, an even 72 at the Johnny Owens and an even 71 at the Marshall Invite ... Kent turned in a 70 at Ocala to equal the 3rd-best round by an Irish golfer in 1997-98 (Vernon shot an opening-round 70 in the fall at the BIG EAST Championship, Connell opened with a 70 at the fall Legends of Indiana) ... Kent added rounds of 72 and 71 at the Johnny Owens ... Brad Hardin turned in an even 72 at Golden Ocala while Weeks broke even at the Johnny Owens (72) and equaled his career low at Marshall (70) ... Connell's 71 at the Butler Invite ranks as the 3rd-best round of his career while Weeks' 71 at Bear Slide tied for his 4th-best career round ... Vernon carded a 69 as a freshman while his impressive '97-'98 included one 70, five 71s and one 72.

TEAM AWARDS TO KING, COOPER: Notre Dame's annual team awards were presented to senior Katie King and junior Beth Cooper ... King received the National Monogram Club Team MVP award while Cooper (3.67 cumulative GPA in business) was named the men's golf team's Rockne Student-Athlete of the Year.

IRISH FINISH 6TH AT OSU, KING EARNS ANOTHER TOP-10 FINISH: The Notre Dame women's golf team finished its season by placing sixth at the Ohio State Invitational ... senior Katie King tied for ninth (231) for her fifth top-10 finish of 1997-98 and the 11th of her career.

KING, MELBY FINISH 1-2: Senior co-captains Katie King and Tracy Melby concluded 1997-98 as Notre Dame's stroke average leaders while maintaining their respective spots as Notre Dame's top-two leaders in career average ... both players logged 93 career rounds, with King owning the best stroke average (81.41) in Irish history while Melby finished just 32 shots back, with an 81.79 average ... Melby and King both figured in the count-four team score in an Irish-record 81 career rounds ... Melby and King's 87.1 percent of career rounds counted are tied for 3rd in Irish history, behind Phares (97.1, 66/68) and Allison Wojnas (88.1, 52/59, 1989-92) ... Phares held the previous Irish record for career stroke average (83.11) while Melby's sister Julie held the prior mark for career rounds counted to the team score (71) ... Phares led the Irish in 17 career tournaments, best at Notre Dame ahead of King (14), Tracy Melby (12) and Crissy Klein (11, 1991-94).

SOPHOMORE SURGE: Sophomore Andrea Klee turned in an impressive 1997-98 season, after struggling as a freshman ... Klee was the only Irish golfer to count to the team score in the first 23 rounds of the season before her final-round 91 in the last tournament of 1997-98 (the Ohio State Invitational) ... Klee's 81.13 season stroke average ranked 3rd on the Irish squad this season and 5th in Notre Dame history ... Klee counted to 95.8 percent of Notre Dame's team rounds this season, ranking fourth in Irish history behind Kathy Phares in 1990-91 (20 of 20) and 1992-93 (21 of 21) and Katie King in 1995-96 (20 of 20) ... Klee's seven-over 151 (77-76) at the spring Midwest Classic represents the third-best 36-hole tournament in Irish women's golf history ... she led the Irish with a 10th-place showing at the fall MSU Invitational (79-80-81) and posted 10 rounds of 80 or better during 1997-98 ... Klee averaged just 91.40 strokes per round as a freshman while counting to the team score in only six of the 20 rounds she played during 1996-97.

DECADE DOMINANCE: Notre Dame's 10th season of women's golf proved to be its most dominant, as the Irish women fashioned a 319.88 team count-four stroke avg. that was well ahead of the record set in 1996-97 (326.71) ... the team's 607 (312-295) at the Midwest Classic shattered the team record for 36 holes by 21 strokes while the 943 (302-320-321) at the Kentucky Invitational broke the team 54-hole record by six shots ...the 295 (+7) at the Midwest Classic, the 302 (+14) at Kentucky and the 303 (+3) at the Illini Classic represent the program's three-best single rounds ... overall, the '97-'98 team posted six of the best nine rounds, four of the top six 54-hole scores and three of the best seven 36-hole scores in the program's history.

KING OF THE HILL: Senior Katie King put the finishing touches on her record-setting Notre Dame career with a team-best 9th-place showing at the OSU Invitational ... King holds Irish records for career avg. (81.42), season avg. (79.50 this season, besting her record of 80.17 as a junior) and 36-hole score (149 at this year's Midwest Classic) ... she counted to the team score in 81 of 93 career rounds, tying classmate Tracy Melby atop the Irish record book ... King had four top-five finishes in '97-'98: 5th at the Kentucky Invitational (71-81-75), 3rd at the Midwest Classic (75-74), 4th at the NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate (78-72) and 5th at the OSU Intercollegiate (77-81) ... she posted eight career rounds of 75 or lower, 32 of 78 or lower ... King shot 80 or lower in 15 of 24 rounds this season, including 11 of the final 13 (she owned a 77.33 spring avg.).

JUNIORS, SOPHOMORES TO DOMINATE 1998-99 TEAM: Notre Dame's top-12 players in 1997-98 included just one junior (Anne Faust, who played in no intercollegiate tournaments), meaning that the 1998-99 team has the chance to return intact for 1999-20 ... juniors-to-be Andrea Klee (81.13) and Beth Cooper (83.48) will be the most experience returners while the promising 1997-98 class includes Mary Klein (82.00), Becca Schloss (84.06) and Danielle Villarosa (85.50) ... Klein tied for 5th at the 15-team Indiana Invitational, after sharing the 1st-round lead with a three-under 71 ... she added rounds of 80 and 79 for a 230 total--the fifth-best 54-hole score in the 10 years of Irish women's golf, besting the 232 posted by Klein's sister Crissy at the 1991-92 OSU Invitational ... Klein's first-round 71 equals the best round in Irish women's golf history (senior Katie King fired a one-under 71 at last fall's Kentucky Invitational) ... Klein played in all 24 rounds, counting to the team score in 17, while Schloss counted in six of the 10 team rounds she played (she also played six rounds as an individual entrant) ... Schloss' highlights included a team-best sixth place showing at the Notre Dame Invitational in Bonita Bay, Fla. (84-80-79) and a second-round 77 at the Midwest Classic (in Surprise, Ariz.) ... Villarosa played five rounds as an individual before serving as one of the six team scores at the season-ending OSU Invitational, where her second-round 79 counted to the team score ... Villarosa also fired a second-round 79 at the NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate in Tampa, Fla.

IRISH EARN SHARE OF ILLINI CLASSIC TITLE (4/19-19): The Notre Dame women's golf team finished in a 1st-place tie with the host team at the 16-team Illini Spring Classic while senior co-captain Tracy Melby came up just short in her bid to repeat as the tournament medalist, finishing a shot behind Toledo's Jessica Popiel at the par-75, 5,840-yard University of Illinois Orange Course ... Notre Dame held a 5-stroke lead on the Illini after a first-day 303, which ranks 3rd in Irish history behind two other rounds during '97-'98: a 295 (+7) at the Midwest Classic and a 302 (+14) at the Kentucky Intercollegiate ... the +3 team round represents the best round to par in the program's history ... Illinoiswhich edged the Irish by two strokes for the title of the '97 Illini Spring Classicstormed to a final-round 327 while the Irish slipped to a 332, forging a tie at 635 ... Melbywho won last year's event with a seven-over 153 (the course then was a par 73)held a two-shot lead on Popiel after an opening-round 71 ... Melby slipped to an 81 while Popiel turned in a 78 to claim 1st place among the 92-golfer field ... Melby's opening-round 71 (-4) equaled the Irish record for low round while setting a new standard for lowest round to par.
