-THE EVENT
The 2013 Crooked Stick Intercollegiate, hosted by Indiana University, Oct. 14-15, Crooked Stick Golf Club, Carmel, Ind.

-THE LAYOUT
Crooked Stick Golf Club was designed by famed golf course architect Pete Dye, and opened for play in 1964. The par 72, 7,290-yard layout has hosted a number of national and international championship events in its history, including the 1991 PGA Championship, 1993 United States Women’s Open, 2009 U.S. Senior Open and the 2012 BMW Championship.

-KUBINSKI ON THE COURSE
“Crooked Stick is an exciting venue. Having hosted major championships and, most recently, the PGA TOUR FedEx Cup BMW Championship in 2012, it will be an outstanding test for all players. Designer Pete Dye makes players think. Our guys have seen it though, which helps. It can be stretched out to over 7,500 yards but the plan is to play it at about 7,300 for our tournament.”

-ON THE TEE
The 54-hole stroke play tournament begins with a shotgun start Monday at 8:45 a.m. (ET). Players will complete two continuous 18-hole rounds on day one before finishing with a final 18 holes on Tuesday. Tee times for the final round will begin at approximately 9 a.m., with groups starting on holes one and 10.

-A CHALLENGING FIELD AWAITS
A total of 14 teams will compete at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate. Joining host Indiana and Notre Dame in the tournament field is Arkansas, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, IUPUI, Kansas, Michigan State, Purdue, TCU and Toledo.

-STARTING FOR THE IRISH...
The Notre Dame starting five are senior Niall Platt, freshman Liam Cox, freshman Matt Rushton, sophomore Cory Sciupider and junior Tyler Wingo.

-TOURNAMENT RESULTS
Results will be posted on the UND Athletic Department web site (www.UND.com) at the conclusion of each round. Live results will be available through GolfStatresults.com.

-LOOKING AHEAD
Notre Dame will travel to the Georgetown Intercollegiate Oct. 21-22 at the Member’s Club at Four Streams in Beallsville, Md.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After a two-week break in the fall schedule following a seventh place finish at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, the University of Notre Dame men’s golf team returns to tournament action this week at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate, hosted by Indiana University, at the Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.

“It’s great to get back into action this week,” Notre Dame head coach Jim Kubinski said. “We had a good break after our home event, where we spent time working on things. It came at a good time.”

With three straight tournaments on the schedule to close out the fall season, Kubinski said that the team took full advantage of the time off to prepare for the second half stretch run.

“We were able to play two tournaments, get some competition under our belts, and then assess our games and work on the areas that needed our focus,” Kubinski said. “With so many young players in there playing, it was good to have that break to prepare for our third tournament of the season.”

Notre Dame will face a stiff test this week in the Crooked Stick Golf Club, which has previously hosted the 1991 PGA Championship, 2009 U.S. Senior Open and 2012 BMW Championship, one of the playoff events in the PGA TOUR FedEx Cup. Kubinski said the course is a challenging layout, but will provide an exciting opportunity for the Irish.

“The greens are reasonably big but it’s important to hit the ball onto the correct areas of those greens or face a difficult attempt to two-putt,” he said. “(Crooked Stick) is fair, though. Players enjoy a strong but fair test. Crooked Stick should offer that for us.”

Notre Dame is a combined 3-1 this season in head-to-head results against teams also in the field this weekend at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate, having previously competed against Eastern Michigan (1-0), Michigan State (1-1) and Toledo (1-0). The Irish will also face their first Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since joining the league in July, as Florida State is one of the other 13 teams entered in the tournament.

A young but experienced lineup will represent Notre Dame, with senior Niall Platt, junior Tyler Wingo, sophomore Cory Sciupider and freshmen Liam Cox and Matt Rushton earning the nod as the team’s starting five.

Stellar rounds in qualifying sessions last week not only set the Notre Dame lineup, Kubinski said, but provided the players on the travel squad with increased confidence heading into the tournament.

“I thought our 72 qualifying tournament at home, to earn spots in our lineup, this week was as good as any we’ve had in my time at Notre Dame,” Kubinski said. “Our guys played really well. We had six different players post rounds in the 60s this past week, including a 66 and multiple 67s.

“We’ve seen those scores at home quite a bit this fall and, as we’ve very much committed to the process and are not weighting any round of golf more than any other, I think we’ll bring out some of that good play on the road this week.”
