NOTRE DAME AND MIAMI BATTLE TO FIRST SCORELESS TIE IN CCHA HISTORY
Notre Dame and Miami played the first scoreless tie in the history of
the Central Collegiate Hockey Association as they battled through 65
minutes of play Saturday, Dec. 10, 1994 at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse.
Irish goaltender Wade Salzman stopped 24 Redskin shots, while Chuck
Thuss made 20 saves in goal for Miami. The shutout was the first (and
only) in Salzman's collegiate career. The Associated Press ran the final
score as 9-8 in favor of Miami because the Redskins had nine penalties
compared to eight for the Irish.
The previous scoreless game involving a current CCHA team came way back
in 1954, when Michigan and Michigan State played in East Lansing. Only
two other scoreless ties have been played in collegiate hockey history,
both involving Michigan and Wisconsin. The first was played at Detroit's
Olympia Arena in 1928, while the second occurred two years later in Ann
Arbor. Maine and Boston University played to a 0-0 tie at BU's Walter
Brown Arena on Feb. 19, 1994, but the game was later forfeited by Maine
for using an ineligible player and is officially a 1-0 BU win.
Current Irish junior Matt Eisler posted a 4-0 shutout of Ohio State
during the 1995-96 season after stopping 28 Buckeyes shots. Eisler's
performance vs. OSU represents the 18th solo shutout effort by a Notre
Dame goaltender since 1969.
Mark Kronholm (1970-74) holds the Notre Dame record for career shutouts,
with four.
