DENVER - Sophomore center David Inman scored twice and
his classmate Jeremiah Kimento turned in a shutout performance as the
Notre Dame hockey team posted its first victory of the season, 4-0 over
Union College, in Saturday's consolation game of the IceBreaker
Tournament, at the University of Denver's Magness Arena.
Kimento-who picked up his first career shutout in his fourth career
start-wrapped up a strong weekend by making 19 saves while helping the
Irish stop all four Union power-play chances. Kimento had 35 saves and
two goals allowed for the weekend, after allowing eight goals in the
season-opening Michigan series.
Notre Dame (1-3-0) played without its senior captain and top 1998-99
scorer Ben Simon, who was shaken up and left Friday's game midway
through the third period after being rammed into the boards.
The Irish cashed in their second power-play chance of the opening
period, with Inman collecting his second goal of the season. Freshman
center Connor Dunlop and junior right wing Ryan Dolder moved the puck
behind the Union net and Dolder slid the puck through the crease. Inman
fought for the puck at the top of a crowded crease area and slapped a
shot past sophomore goaltender Brandon Snee (10:24) for the early 1-0
lead.
Inman scored again in the final minute of the second period, after
senior right wing Joe Dusbabek collected a loose puck behind the Union
net. Dusbabek sent a pass from the left corner that slid to the top of
the slot and Inman redirected a low shot that beat Snee to the glove
side.
Dunlop assisted on four goals during the tournament-including the lone
goal in Friday's 2-1 loss to Providence-and leads the Irish with five
points this season (he also had a shorthanded goal in the opener vs.
Michigan).
Both teams had three power-play opportunities during the first two
periods but combined for just one man-up score during the first 40
minutes.
Notre Dame held a 36-19 edge in shots on goal, including an 20-3 margin
during the third period as the Irish pulled away from the Skating
Dutchmen.
The Irish padded their lead with a pair of goals midway through the
final period. Junior left wing Dan Carlson emerged with the puck in the
Irish zone and passed to Dunlop, who worked down the right boards before
sliding the puck towards the faceoff circle. Speedy junior left wing
Matt Van Arkel then skated onto the puck and crossed the center of the
blue line before unleashing a low shot that tucked inside the left post
for a 3-0 lead (9:49)
Two minutes later, sophomore center Brett Henning scored Notre Dame's
second power-play goal of the night. Senior defenseman Sean Molina set
up the goal by sweeping the puck behind the Union net and Dunlop poked a
pass into the slot area, with Henning converting for his first goal of
the season (11:46).
The Irish return to Central Collegiate Hockey Association action on
Saturday, Oct. 23, at Ferris State (7:05 EDT) and then will face the
Bulldogs on Sunday at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. (5:05
p.m.).
