Final Stats

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Notre Dame Fighting Irish opened the 2005-06 season on the road against one of the top teams in the nation, the fourth-ranked Colorado College Tigers, and came away with a 3-1 loss in front of 6,577 fans at the World Arena on Friday night.

The Tiger defense held the Irish to just 13 shots in the game and the offense got goals from Trevor Frischmon, Marty Sertich and Joey Crabb. Victor Oreskovich got the lone Notre Dame goal in the third period while goaltender David Brown made 37 saves for the Irish.

The game was the first time the Irish played in Colorado Springs, Colo., since facing the Tigers on Oct. 24-25, 1980.

After a scoreless first period, Colorado College scored twice in the second stanza to take a 2-0 lead.

Frischmon broke the tie at 14:08 of the period with his first goal of the season. The senior center corralled a loose puck along the right goal line and carried it out to the bottom of the right wing circle where he whipped a low wrist shot past Brown.

The lead would go to 2-0 at 17:53 when reigning Hobey Baker winner Marty Sertich stick handled through traffic in front of the Irish net, got Brown to go down on the ice and slid a backhander inside the right post for his second goal of the season.

The Irish were out shot in the second period by a 14-1 margin with Jason Paige getting in alone on Tiger goaltender Matt Zaba for the lone Irish shot with just over a minute left in the period.

Colorado College upped the lead to 3-0 just 32 seconds into the final period when Crabb tucked a rebound under Brown on the power play for his first goal of the season.

The Irish finally broke through on Zaba at the 13:38 mark of the third period when Oreskovich jammed the rebound of a Tim Wallace shot past the junior goaltender, snapping his shutout bid. The goal was the first of the season for Oreskovich.

On the night, the Irish were out shot by a 40-13 margin. Zaba finished with 12 saves on the night.

Things don't get easier for the Irish as they travel north Denver to face two-time defending national champions, the University of Denver Pioneers. Game time at Magness Arena is set for 8:05 p.m. South Bend time.

IRISH NOTES

** Notre Dame wore gold helmets for the first time since the 1975-76 season. The gold color is the same metallic gold that is used on the Notre Dame football helmets. The hockey helmets have no markings on them, just like the football helmets, except for an American flag on the back.

** With the loss in the opener, the Irish are now 19-17-2 in season openers in the 38-year history of the program. In road openers, the Irish are now 14-21-3 all-time.

** Three Notre Dame newcomers made their first appearances for the Irish versus Colorado College. Freshmen forwards Garrett Regan and Erik Condra were joined in the lineup by junior defenseman Tom Sawatske. Freshman goaltender Jordan Pearce served as the back up to David Brown in goal.
