Cotnoir, Simon And Andrusiak Score in 3-2 Irish Hockey Win at Ohio State
Irish Score Twice Short-Handed, Once on Power Play
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Junior defenseman Benoit Cotnoir and sophomore center Ben Simon came through with shorthanded goals and senior center Lyle Andrusiak scored on the power play for a 3-0 second-period lead as the University of Notre Dame hockey team held off a late Ohio State rally to post a 3-2 victory over the Buckeyes, in off-campus Central Collegiate Hockey Association action Sunday at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum.
Notre Dame (6-4-0, 3-3-0 CCHA) again played well on the road, where the Irish have won four times while losing in the closing minutes at Michigan State (3-1 on Nov. 8) and Miami (5-4 on Nov. 15). The Irish penalty killing unit stopped seven of eight OSU power plays while converting the two short-handed goals, giving Notre Dame half as many shorthanded goals (3) this season as power-play goals allowed (6). The Irish season penalty killing percentage stands at 88.7 percent (47-for-53).
Notre Dame sophomore goaltender Forrest Karr made 28 saves in his first start of the season, turning away OSU's first 23 shots on goal.
The teams combined for 33 penalties in the game, including 17 by OSU.
Ohio State (5-4-1, 2-3-0 CCHA) made things interesting with a pair of third-period goals in a span of less than two minutes but the hosts could not come up with the equalizer.
Cotnoir--who scored his first goal of the season Saturday at Miami--opened the scoring midway through the first period, after skating onto a deflected shot from freshman left wing Dan Carlson. Cotnoir sent a hard shot from the right circle, beating OSU goaltender Ray Aho to the lower right corner (10:29).
Simon netted his second shorthanded goal of the season and seventh goal overall midway through the second period, after poking the puck away from OSU defenseman Ryan Jestadt at mid-ice. The left-handed Simon skated in on the breakaway and faked Aho before depositing a backhanded shot for the 2-0 Irish lead (11:33).
Andrusiak padded the Irish lead five minutes later with his third goal of the weekend. Cotnoir initiated the power-play score with a pass to junior left wing Aniket Dhadphale, who fired a shot from the left circle. Aho deflected the shot over his left shoulder but Andrusiak was waiting at the far right post and scooped the puck into the net (15:36).
Todd Compeau put OSU on the board with a rebound goal at the 5:38 mark of the third period and Hugo Boisvert scored on the power play moments later, after taking a left-circle faceoff and poking the puck forward before beating Karr for a 3-2 game (7:27).
