Two Irish Hockey Players Invited To U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp

Thomas DiPauli has been invited to attend the U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp this August.

June 10, 2013

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Two members of the 2013-14 Notre Dame hockey team are among a group of 40 players that have been invited to attend the 2013 U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp that will be held in Lake Placid, N.Y., from August 3 through August 10. The group of 40 includes 16 defensemen and 24 forwards with the goaltenders to be named later this month. All participating players are candidates for the 2014 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship that will be played Dec. 26, 2013 to Jan. 5, 2014, in Malmo, Sweden.

Attending the camp from Notre Dame are sophomore forward Thomas DiPauli (Woodridge, Ill.) and incoming freshman forward Vince Hinostroza (Bartlett, Ill.). DiPauli attended the Evaluation Camp last season while Hinostroza is a first-time invitee.

The camp, which will take place at Lake Placid's Olympic Center, will feature practices, intra-squad scrimmages and international games featuring Canada, Finland, Sweden and two teams representing the United States.

DiPauli is a 5-11, 185-pound left wing who had a strong rookie season for the Irish in 2012-13. He saw action in all 41 games for Notre Dame, scoring five goals with seven assists for 12 points and was +8 on the season. One of the team's top penalty killers, DiPauli is no stranger to international hockey as he is a product of the U.S. National Team Developmental Program. He served as an alternate captain on the Under-18 team that won a gold medal at the World Under-18 championships in April of 2012. He also has played for the United States at the 2011 Under-18 Vlad Dzurilla Tournament, winning a gold medal, and was a Team USA member at the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge in 2010. That team captured a silver medal. The Washington Capitals selected the speedy forward in the fourth round, 100th overall, in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Incoming freshman Vince Hinostroza will join DiPauli at the U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp in hopes of playing in the 2014 World Junior Championships in Malmo Sweden.

Hinostroza will join the Irish lineup this season after spending the last three years with the United States Hockey League's Waterloo Black Hawks. During the 2012-13 season, he was fourth on the Black Hawks in scoring and tied for 15th in the USHL with 25 goals and 35 assists for 60 points in 49 games. He added four power-play goals, one short-handed tally and two game winners in helping Waterloo to a third-place finish in the USHL's Western Division with a 39-21-4 record, good for 82 points. He then led the team in playoff scoring with four goals and three assists for seven points in five playoff games as the Black Hawks fell to Fargo, three games to two in the opening round. A talented, hard working forward who brings energy to the ice, the 5-9, 170-pound forward finished his Waterloo career playing in 151 career games with 53 goals and 73 assists for 126 points. In 2011-12, he helped the Black Hawks to the USHL's Clark Cup finals versus Green Bay. Last fall, he had the opportunity to represent his country as he served as captain of the gold-medal winning USA team at the Under-19 World Junior A Challenge in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. During the tournament he was selected as the U.S. player of the game in three of four contests and led the United States in scoring with six goals and two assists for eight points while being selected to the all-tournament team. Hinostroza was selected in the sixth round, 169th overall, in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft last June by the Chicago Black Hawks.

Since 1976, Notre Dame has had 16 players play in the World Junior Championships with Mario Lucia (Plymouth, Minn.) playing for the gold-medal winning U.S. team last January in the tournament played in Ufa, Russia.
